train from zurich to lucerne

Hi

I would like to know if we should buy our train tickets from Zurich to Lucerne online ahead of time, or if they'll be the same price as is shown on the website when if we buy them on the day?

Many thanks

There is no need to buy standard tickets online ahead of time. Just buy them when you arrive. The price will be the same.

You can make savings by buying Supersaver tickets online up to 14 days before you travel. However these are for a specific timed train and if you miss it you will have to pay again and will not be entitled to a refund.

Thanks! We'll just wait until we're there in case there are flight delays etc.

Gday. We arrive at Zurich Airport at 14.50 and would like to catch train to Lucerne where we are staying for 4 days. How do we go about catching the train and does it leave from the airport or do we have to go to the train station somewhere else ?

Thanks for any replys.

There are direct trains from Zurich Airport to Lucerne. Others require a change at Zurich HB. The journey takes just over an hour.

You can get times at:- www.sbb.ch/en/home.html

Hi, as you leave the secure arrivals and enter the public arrivals area, you will see doors out to the pickup lanes. Cross over the lanes and into the building on the other side. It's a huge shopping center and the train station is on the lower levels. You can take your luggage trolleys all the way to the tracks. Go down the escalator or lift (if you go down the escalator, be sure to obey the warning on the trolley to not put things above the strap) to the floor below and you will find the ticket machines and ticket windows there. Oh, if you need Swiss francs, there are ATMs in the public area of the arrivals hall.

The platforms are one more floor down - if you go to a ticket window, just ask which platform. If you get your ticket from a machine or have a pass, there are timetable boards in the area and you can look there for your platform (gleis in German).

Have a great trip!

We are travelling from Lucerne to Zurich by train to make a connection to Salzburg and the timetable gives us 15 minutes to get to the next train. Does anyone know, or have done the trip, what platforms we need to get to for our onward journey? Help would be greatly appreciated. Suzi

Hi Suzie,

For my trip from Zurich to Munich, there are 2 changes, with the platforms, arrival and departure timings, all given. So the platforms and times where and when you need to board your trains should also be stated on yr ticket.

Where are you looking for the schedule? SBB usually gives you the track numbers if it is not too far ahead.

Hi, it is pretty easy to make a connection in 7 or 8 minutes at Zurich so 15 should be easy IF you can manage all your luggage in one trip without a luggage trolley as they can be hard to find sometimes. Keep a 2 franc coin in your pocket is that is the cost of a trolley at Zurich.

You can also ask your conductor (called a controller in Switzerland) which platform for your departure to Salzburg. They speak excellent English. Also, the ticket agent in Luzern should be able to tell you.

Hope this helps.
