 Chocolate lover in Zurich

Hi there, I have one full day in Zurich for our honeymoon trip to Switzerland in September.

My soon to be wife loves chocolate (like most people). Can you advise of any good locations in Zurich city centre where we could go? I heard that the Lindt factory tours are dont run anymore, is that true? Is there any other factory tour I can do around the city or just advise of any good chocolate shops?

Try a box of Batons Kirsch, or better still Baton Williams if you can, by Lindt, widely available in Switzerland, but I can never find them outside Switzerland, except as single pieces in a box of Lindt assorted chocolates. They are dark cocolate sticks filled with liqueur and coated in cocoa. I think they are worth travelling to Zurich for. Lindt and Sprungli also do a Kirsch baton sold in their assortments sold over the counter. Their assortments are generally excellent.

Hi, there's a cafe called Schrober in the Altstadt (old town) that serves some of the richest and chocolate-y hot chocolate you'll ever drink. It's rather kitschy but fun - worth a stop for a cup of hot chocolate if nothing else but they also have chocolates, etc. for sale.

You can find Sprungli shops at various places - there's one on the Bahnhofstrasse about 3 blocks from the train station. There you can buy chocolates by the piece for a small box or just one or a big box! For nibbling chocolate I like the Frey brand sold in the Migros supermarkets - their dark chocolate with orange is delicious.

Hope this helps - have a great time!

In any COOP supermarket you will Lindt (their new assortments of bar chocolates are sinful) and Cailler in very good prices. The organic coop chocolates are very good too.

www.lindt.com and www.cailler.com

The MIGROS supermarket has its own assortment -Frey, cheaper but not as good or in such variations as Lindt and Cailler.

Sprüngli is famous in Zürich, his chocolates are excellent but expensive and it is more known for his Luxemburgeli (kind of tiny meringues with various cream fillings).

Then there is Teuscher (whose chocolate is -at my opinion- a good reason to migrate to switzerland) but also quite expensive.

www.spruengli.ch

www.teuscher.com

If I may say so: Migros if you like good chocolate, COOP if you like very good chocolate, Teuscher if you adore chocolate and Srüngli if you go for the best.

There is a chocolate train (in the area of Montreux):

swisstravelsystem.ch/…

which is worth doing if you have the time.

The Lindt factory is in Kilchberg (so near to Zürich), I think they do not make public tours but have a small museum.

The Cailler (Nestlé) factory is in BROC (near Fribourg ) and according to their site they offer tours.

To any of these places you can go by train and also enjoy the way there. Fribourg is also a very nice town to visit anyways.

hope this helped a bit

I've been to Switzerland several times and sampled the wonderful chocolates, but not until someone sent me a box of Teuscher truffles at home (go figure) have I ever tasted anything so wonderful. Yes, I am a choco-holic and the Teuscher was THE absolute best by far.

A friend sent us a box from New York where they are imported from Zurich. I didn't even know they existed until I got back to the USA. Next time I'm in Zurich I'm heading straight for the Teuscher store.

my absolute favourite too with the exception of Baeschle in my hometown in Basel which I think are even better!!

Next time you should try them too and then see if you manage to pull yourself together and leave the store : - )

There is a Teuscher shop along the Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich's main shopping street.

In the department store "JELMOLI" you'll find a Teuscher shop on groundfloor. Sample the little chocolate bars with different flavours, like their black chocolate with pink pepper!!!

Enjoy! Linnen

The Lindt factory shop in Kilchberg is a must for any chocolate lovers. It is an easy train ride from Zurich (which leaves you plenty of time to do other stuff in your day), and easy to get to from the station.

The area smells like amazing melted chocolate.

The bus will drop you off right outside the factory, but walk a little bit back up the road to get to the shop. (It's not very well advertised or sign posted).

The factory doesn't do tours, but just for the shopping it is worth it! There are hundreds of different kinds of chocolate to choose from (you won't know where to start!), and it's not too expensive. (Cheaper than what we pay in SA, and cheaper than the Co-op).

A lot of people were so amazed (me being one of them), that it's commonplace for people to take photos of all the chocolate on the shelves! And make sure your bags are empty so that you can take lots and lots of chocolate home...

Highly reccomended.

Enjoy!

Hi Richinsydney

You might also consider the Merkur chocolate shop on the Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich, it on the left hand side on the first corner of the Bahnhofstrasse as you walk away from the station, try the heart shape chocs which you can pick and mix, they also have a good choice of other brands. Another pick and mix selection are the licquor (sorry I can't spell today) batons usually around the same area.

Teuscher shop along the Bahnhofstrasse and one other shop cross from it are the best. You must try there Champagne truffles. This is the one thing I constantly get hounded to bring back or order. We get them in the states. They come in once a week from Zürich so it is not any cheaper here. N-Joy it while you can there.
