Renting a van in Zurich

Hi. We are two couples with 2 kids each looking to rent a van from Zurich so we can travel over switzerland together. Most car rental websites don't have an option for a 8 - 9 seater van, and if they do, the price quoted is equivalent to renting 3 midsize sedans! Does anyone know of any place where I can find such van rentals at reasonable prices?

Hello Maniish. I have a little experience with this from a few years ago at our university institute. There are a couple things going agains you here: - Large vehicles like this are typically rented for commercial purposes - so higher prices and very low km's, and - such "Large" vehicles are difficult to drive and drive in the small streets of "old-town" Switzerland - so typically high insurance costs as well. So,... the easy answer is it will be very difficult to find something at "reasonable prices". (...not to mention the cost of petrol here!!!)

Two main suggestions:

First - think very carefully about whether you want to do the driving - this is a country where public transportation is EXCELLENT, and you and your group would be able to get everywhere together easily on the train or post-bus (and they are not crowded and are very punctual and comfortable).

Two - if you are still set on renting a mini-bus, then if there are any "cheap" sites, they will much more likely be available only in German (and aimed at locals). So search for "Mietwagen", "9-sitzer", "Kleinbus" and "Transporter".

...but seriously - go on the train (Like all the Swiss do), you will be much better off.

...beside the fact that you need a bus drivers license if you want to operate a vehicle with more than 8 seats...

Hi Manish,

canswiss has given great advice. My choice also would be the excellent train / bus transport mode - very good frequency and very traveller-friendly. The ' Fast Baggage ' service - check-in luggage at one station and get delivery at another - is available at many stations. Moreover, most scenic towns are car-free and most mountain journeys can be done only by train/cable car.

You have not mentioned the number of days of visit - some form of the Swiss Pass or the Half-Fare Card would be economical since your kids ( if 15 or below ) can travel free if you buy this Pass or Card.

For all train schedules, fares,Fast Baggage service etc.check -

Thanks for all the helpful replies. Guess the balance is swaying towards the rail passes.
