4 days plan with stay at Lausanne

Hi..

I am planning a 4 day trip to switzerland in end of june with my wife. The flight journeys are booked to and fro from Geneva, and the temporary hotel booking is done in Lausanne. Need to fill in the points in between and this being my first trip to switzerland would need pointers from the experts to plan the same-

1st day - reaching geneva at noon -- by approx 2hrs flight journey

1st night, 2nd night and 3rd night --temp hotel booking done in Lausanne.

4th day evening 7 pm --need to exit geneva by flight

We are mainly interested in scenic beauties and do not have any problems with exerting ourselves in terms of walk, treking, etc. Also not sure if we get a chance to visit swiss again! ;)

Pls. advice to draw the plan!

Thanks a ton in advance!!!

Are you locked into staying in Lausanne? It's a nice place, but if you're interested most in hiking, then you'd be best staying up in the mountains. Lausanne has lovely lake views and you can walk around the vineyards, but if you were after meadows, cowbells and so on, you need to look elsewhere.

Don't worry if you are locked into Lausanne, as you can easily day trip into the local mountains, and the lake is lovely.

Not really locked into Lausanne. But just wanted to make one place as a base and it turned out that the hotels in lausanne are less expensive! :)

Would you consider staying up in the mountains? There are lots of options.

If you are willing to travel further afield, then perhaps think about beautiful car free towns such as Wengen or Murren. In the other direction, Zermatt is a great choice, but with fame comes higher prices. If you still like the idea of being relatively near the lake, you could look into villages up in the vineyards (let's see if others have good budget suggestions), or you could try the village of Les Paccots where I stay. It's generally not as pricey as down by the lake and us a good spot for hiking, although you do have to take public transport to reach wet weather activities in the wider area.

If you want to make Lausanne your base, there are lots of options for day trips -

A day on the lakes , using ferries to visit Montreux and the Chateau of chillion , or over to France - Yvoire is a beautiful quaint village for example.

There is great walking all along Lac Leman from the shore side towns of Montreux, Vevey etc , or up into the vineyards

Use the trains to access - Leysin ,or Villars for alpine scenery , glacier skiing on Les Diablerets ,

Visit Gruyere , a quaint old town , with the famous cheese makers

Lausanne is a nice, Swiss city. But not a great place for tourists. First it is hard to find one's way around it (though the new Metro has helped...) It is on a sloping hillside from about 900m down to the lake at 400m. And this is bisected by two old river beds (sicne filled in, but still great changes in level) with the result you are always go up or down and never know from a map where you are... Also not the best place for someone who likes nature!

I think NWL's idea of going to a place in the mountains where you can hike AND see things is great. For such a short stay I would choose one place and stay there, making day trips or hikes to other places. The "Pays d'Enhaut" in the canton de Vaud would be a good choice. Base yourselves, for example, at Château d'Oex. Lots of hotels there, as well as cafés and restaurants. From there you can visit, easily - Gruyères, Broc (Chocolate Factory!), Gstaad, the lovely villages of Rougemont and Rossinière and Saanen and even get up to the Glacier 3000 on the Diablerets mountain at the top of the Col du Pillon. End June is a good time to be in this region. It is reasonably low as mountain resorts go, so spring comes earier there than int he high alps. There are lots of things to do and to see, and loads of walks to take. And -iceing on the cake! - only a short train ride from Montreux which in turn is only just over an hour from the Geneva airport! On the way back, do stop in Montreux and go to teh Château de Chillon and maybe have lunch in town...

Thanks a lot everyone for the wonderful suggestions! Would now think of changing the base. Also being completely new to the place now need to research a bit on the places suggested and fit it into the plan of 3 Nights-4 days.

You could combine a night in Lausanne and two nights elsewhere. In which case I suggest that either Montreux OR Chexbres (marvellous view on the lake, convenient to all transport) would allow you to see the places mentioned in the Pays d'Enhaut and the Pre-Alpes.

Thanks Hambagahle! So, which combination do you suggest-

1) One night in Lausanne and two nights in château d'Oex

2) One night in Lausanne and two nights in Chexbrex

3) Or all 3 nights in château d'Oex

Also, at swisspasses.com I am thinking of taking the offer for region lake geneva pass for 2 days unlimited travel and 3 days at 50% reduction , as currently there is an offer of 2 passes for price of 1. Do you suggest the same and if yes, looking at the above 3 options, which one would suit this pass.

Thanks!
