Very brief stay!

Am lucky enough to be going on an escorted Tour of Italy this year and we're calling in at Lugano on the way home (I think just for three/four hours).

When we went on a Great Rail Journey and stopped briefly in Switzerland on the way home we were caught out - couldn't have a coffee or anything as we had no Swiss francs. Fortunately it was only for about an hour whilst we changed trains so we survived!

Can anyone advise me if Euros are accepted in Lugano at restaurants, shops etc? Would rather not use a credit card if I can help it. Also, any advice on anywhere that's a "must-see" during our visit? We're looking forward to having a walk around the town.

Any advice on either/both these topics gratefully received!

Euros are generally accepted in Lugano, but you'll be given a poor rate of exchange and any change will be given to you in Swiss Francs. I know you say you would rather not use your credit card, but you're going to get a significantly better exchange rate if you use that in preference to Euros.

Just to give an indication (at least here in Geneva and it's likely to be similar in Lugano), I've seen cafes take Euros 1 to 1 against the Swiss Franc, when the official rate is somewhere between 1.25 and 1.30 (though I admit most places won't be quite as bad as that).

Thanks for your reply, Catmouse, it was very helpful and I appreciate it. Credit card to the ready when I go, I think!
