From Zermatt to Lugano/Italy Lake District and on to Venice

We'll be traveling in Switzerland, and will likely have our last stop in Switzerland be Zermatt. We want to go from there to the Italian Lake district (suggestions for a day in this area would be appreciated) and finish in Venice. What's the best approach? We won't have a car.

Should we plan on staying in Milan and making trips to the Lake District? Or could we stay in Lugano and make a day trip to the Lake District?

What's the best way to get from that general area to Venice? I'm assuming by train?

Hi there,

Zermatt-Brig-Domodossola-Stresa could be a good first hop. Stresa is on the nicest part of Lago Maggiore, with e.g. easy boat access to the Borromean islets. Two nights later continue to Milan and then Venice.

All the best,

Lugano is in Switzerland, we have also a beautiful lake! Milan is a bit far from the lakes!

Well technically both Lago di Lugano and Lago Maggiore are shared Swiss-Italian, though the percentages differ a lot; Maggiore is something like 15% Swiss and Lugano above 50%.

The answer just seemed the most appropiate way of seeing one of the big Pre-Alpine lakes as a stopover between Zermatt to Venice. Lugano is not on an as easy travel route between the two as Stresa happens to be...

Tnx,

OP did not mention the time of year re her visit.

On www.sbb.ch timetable, type in from [Zermatt] to [Lugano], via [Andermatt] or [Locarno]. Compare the routing. From Locarno, one can sail to Stresa, or train to Lugano. It is a pity that you have only one day.

From town of Lugano to train station there is a funicular, from town of Stresa to train station, there is a 100 yd walk uphill.
