Locarno vs. Stresa

Hi,

My husband and I need to spend a day in either Stresa or Locarno on our way to Florence from Interlaken in early May. We don't want to spend an entire day travelling by train so thought we could break the journey at one of these places which would be better? Also we had wanted to visit Lake Maggiore and generally enjoy a small town experience in Italy / Switzerland. Both look amazing in the pictures and the forums so finding it very difficult to decide. How do both places compare in terms of scenic beauty, local eateries, town centre and general relaxation? Also is Locarno more expensive (in food etc)? Please help! Thanks!

Hi there,

Routewise Stresa fits in a lot better. It's on the main line Brig-Domodossola-Milan, whilst Locarno is on a more or less sidetrack from the Gotthard-Lugano-Milan line. Stresa is also Italian and hence about 20-30% cheaper in terms of food than Locarno. For the other qualities they're more on less on par, though Locarno if you go higher up the mountain has more scenery - but not the level you've already seen in Berner Oberland. So I'd go for Stresa.

All the best,

Hello!

You can reach Locarno from Brig - Domodossola - Locarno by taking the Centovallli Railway: 52 km of magical landscapes and lush vegetation can be seen from this unique train. Centovalli ('One hundred Valleys") is an unforgettable journey (see for yourself: http://ow.ly/kdXzm)!

Apart from this, most striking of all Locarno's sights is the Franciscan Santuario della Madonna del Sasso (info : http://ow.ly/kdXJK), located above the city and from where one enjoys a wonderful view of lake Maggiore. Piazza Grande is the most famous town of Locarno, home of the Film Festival in august! For additional information about the Swiss-side of Lake Maggiore, visit the local Tourist Board website: www.ascona-locarno.com

Enjoy your stay!
