Jungfraujoch - is it a full day event

We are planning for 8 days trip to Switzerland and current have reserved one day for Jungfrau (July 21 2008).

We will be staying at Wengen during this portion of our trip.

Could you please suggest what else can be achieved within that day OR is Jungfrau visit itself a full day event?

Wengen is a great area to stay to enjoy the Jungfrau.

It really depends on what you would like to do. We went up from Wengen at around 10AM and were back at Kline Sheldig (KS) by 1PM. If you are like us and wander for a few hours but stay near the main building one day is tons of time. We didn't eat on the mountain, but rather at the restaurant in KS by the tracks and it was great!

If you catch the earliest train to the top you should be done by noon and it will give you a discount on the expensive ticket.

We just got back from our trip a few days ago. We also stayed in Wengen and loved it. We went up to Jungrau and unfortunetly it was cloudy the day we went, so we only spent about 1hr30min at the top. We preferred going to Schilthorn, then again it was sunny the day we went there and a lot cheaper. I'm not sure which one I would have liked better if it had been sunny both days...Schilthorn.

When you go to Jungfrau, if you are going from Wengen and you wanted to add a hike in, you can take a cable car from Wengen to Mannlichen and then hike from there to Kleine Scheidegg (easy hike, probably about 1hr) and then take the train from KS to the top. If this doesn't make sense now, it will when you get there.

Also as a side note, we really enjoyed the restaurant at Hotel Barren for a good dinner in Wengen.

Have fun.

Don't forget Schynige Platte. Surely one of the best views in the BO on a clear day.

From Wengen it's probably possible to do something else, but you wouldn't want to plan to go too far. You can obviously spend as little time up the top as you want, but we found that 4 hours still didn't give us time to see everything up there, we didn't have a meal and we missed out the glacier walk because we just couldn't make the effort at that height.

The obvious thing to combine with is late lunch at Kleine Scheidegg, a walk to Mannlichen or the train to Grindelwald. You could just combine with Trummelbach if you really hace a lot of stamina, but most people find Jungfraujoch extremely tiring.

From Interlaken you would have to be very impressive to do anything other than Jungfraujoch and remain fully functional the next day.
