Weather in April in Bernese Oberland

Dear Forumers,

Need your assistance for the weather in Murren and Bernese Oberland in April.

a) Is it during the rainy season? Will it rain more often in the morning or evening?

b) If there are clouds in the Schilthorn and Jungfrau peaks, typically they will appear in early morning, mid morning or afternoon? How long is the duration?

c) What would be a typical clothing attire to wear in April if the itinerary includes the following

i) Day 1 - cable car to Schilthorn

- hiking from Grutschalp to Murren

- visit Trummelbach Falls

ii) Day 2 - train to Jungfrau

- cable car to First, probably First flyer

Thanks so much for your advice

Hi A_Screw_Loose

Just to give you an overview how the weather can be in April

- temperatures between -5 and + 24°C

- weather from snowfall over rain until sunshine all is possible even the same day

- we have winter in our country and April is springtime. There is no rainy season in Central Europe.

Or to tell you shortly, weather is not predictable expecialy for April

As stated above the weather is quite unpredictable at any time of the year but April is right in between seasons so it has even more variables. If winter hangs on a little longer you will have a good bit of snow if spring comes early you will get more sun, warmer days etc. Here is a site that gives you the average temperatures and levels of rain or snow. Again these are just averages.

Also consider the First flyer closes for the spring on April 3 and the Schilthornbahn cablecar is closed for maintenence from April 26 to 29th.

To answer your itinerary questions.

Typically the clouds roll in during the afternoon even on sunny days but like the rest of the weather it's unpredictable. Visiting the Schilthorn and Jungfrau in April will be cold and windy. The Schilthorn is 10,000 ft and the Jungfrau is 13,000 ft and the wind blows almost all the time. Be prepared with winter layers and a good windproof outer shell. When you visit Trummelbach Falls be sure to wear your raincoat. You will get wet.

We have rain all year round...and rain turns to snow at altitude even in summer when it is cold. In April the weather is totally unpredicable from one year (and maybe one day!) to the next.

Hello pore, BlandineForberg, mountaintopper and Hambagahle,

Thanks for your comments and response esp mountaintopper.

So am I correct in saying at most of the time, it is better to go early morning to Jungfrau and Schilthorn during sunny days as there are less chances of clouds, but if it is raining then the itinerary is a no-go?

Looks like my luggage for souvenirs would now have to be stocked with winter clothing and umbrellas and raincoats :(

Yes..It is better to go early morning, but do see the webcam in the morning before leaving for Schilthorn or Jungfraujoch.

If it is cloudy or raining then there is no point in going up the mountaintop and waste your money.

well, there is one exception to the last "rue" -- if the clouds are really low and it is more fog than rain, it is worth checking to see what is going on above them. Have your hotel concierge or reception desk call the Jungfraubahn people. Because if the top of the fog is at 1500m, say, then the mountains above are simply glorious, all in sunshine, and looking down on the sea of clouds below you is a sight that is totally amazing. But you won't know from where you are where the top of the clouds is. you have to ask.

That is the presicely the reason I had mentioned above to check the live webcam in the morning before leaving. The hotels usually also have the morning weather channel also which shows the webcam .
