Hiking in the French or Italian alps near Geneva

Flying to Geneva this Thursday and will rent a car. We have hiked in Kandersteg and Leukerbad and loved it, but are looking at going to the French alps this time, as it is less expensive and currently not as fully booked. No more than 2 hours drive from the airport. I know this is a Swiss forum but I'm sure that there are a lot of Geneva experts who know the French alps too. We are reasonably fit, prefer walking (not climbing) uphills and take the lift down, around 5 hours hike during a day, and return to the hotel. We'd like to stay in a smaller village and not the big concrete skiing villages. The Aosta valley could also be of interest. Any tips would be very much appreciated.
