Geneva to Martigny - one night stay

We are travelling by train from Geneva to Martigny in 2 weeks time (before visiting our daughter in Verbier) and wish to spend one night somewhere along the train route. Can anyone recommend the best place for a short visit and overnight?

Hi Suep2Worthing,

lol, we can recommend a *ton* of places, as there are many along that route. But our recommendations will be best for you if you could give us a little more information, such as --

Do you want to be on Lake Geneva? How about in the vineyards? Do you want to be in a town or a village? Do you want a hotel overlooking the lake?

Right off the top of my head, in order of precedence, i would say:

Vevey

Lutry

Montreux

Have fun as you plan!

Why not stay right here in Martigny? This is a very nice small town with an absolutely stunning place Centrale, a world class art museum and lots of things to see and do...

see this for info:

tripadvisor.co.uk/Travel-g580371-s4/Martigny…

There is one 4 star hotel - the Vatel, walkable from the station. And quite a few 3 stars.

Thank you for your replies. The impression we got of all the possible areas was that they were all interesting and beautiful so we just plumped for Montreux in the end. Looking forward to our travels now.

Montreux is lovely. Good choice.

If you are travelling by train and plan to spend the night there you will need a ticket to Montreux, and then a second ticket for the next day to Verbier.

Thank you, we have noted that. As we have several bags would you recommend us travelling from Le Chable by bus or on the bubble?

Bus will be lots easier. There is a large luggage hold and the driver will help with the bags. If you take the télécabine you have to walk across the railway lines to the departure point, then walk up a long flight of stairs (no lift!). Bus will bring you to the Poste in the middle of Verbier and you can call a taxi from there. We use May Taxi - 027 771 7771 - if you tell them what time the bus gets there they will be waiting for you.

Thank you so much for that info. Do you know how frequent the buses are? We think our hotel is not far from the bus stop but our daughter will be meeting us there anyway. Thank you very much for all your advice.

Buses from le Châble are roughly every hour and run in conjunction, more or less (within 10mins) of the arrival of the train.

Buses in Verbier run on a "loop" basis. There are 4 routes. Two of the routes are very very frequent. nos 1 and 4 less so but still every 20mins or so. If you tell me which hotel I can tell you either where to get off the bus from le Châble or which bus to take from the Place Centrale or Poste.

then you really do not need a bus!

Get off the bus from le Châble at its terminus, la Poste de Verbier. Collect your bags and leave the garage. Cross the street, turn left into the Place Centrale and then take the uphill road to the right (sort of a "Y" junction for about 75m. The Hotel de la Poste is on your right. Should take you all of 5 mins since you have luggage!! Less when you do not.
