Getting from Geneva Switzerland to Valmorel in France

Hi

Can anyone advise the best way to get from Geneva (not necessarily at the airport) to Valmorel resort in France. I hear the train trip to Moutiers is quite complicated, so I think a transfer will be best and cheaper than hiring a car for 10 days. Any links would be helpful.

Thanks guys.

You don't mention when you are travelling. There is a bus from Moutiers train station to Valmorel during the winter if you were to get the train first.

Otherwise an airport transfer might be the best option. There are plenty of companies in that area going to Meribel etc so shop around.

Then the link I provided above is valid for public transport requirements.

An airport transfer should cost in the region of €260 (depending on how many people are travelling).

Interestingly it is nowadays easier and less expensive to go from Paris to Moutiers (direct train - TGV - in 4 hours) than from Geneva...

So from Geneva, there is a bus service. Details are on http://www.gare-routiere.ch/. Go to the bottom right drop down menu and select "Alpine Resorts" (last choice). A pdf document will open. Go to the section "Stations de la Tarentaise" where Moutiers and Valmorel are listed. It seems it is a 3 hours bus ride. Pay attention to the notes as some services are run only during the week.ends. Tickets can be bought on-line. Count CHF 186 per pax for a return ticket.

It is not that difficult to Moutiers from Geneva. There are numerous services daily that require only 1 change. Fastest in just over 3hrs.

Departures from Geneve Cornavin

Most routing over Chambery or Aix les Bains depending on time of day.

COst 34CHF or €27

see www.sbb.ch or www.sncf.com

and there is a local bus service from Moutiers to Valmorel

last years schedule but gives you an idea

Looks good at first sight, giftzwerg. But January 19th being a Saturday, there is only one connexion involving two changes, total journey time between Geneva and Moutiers: 3h27! And the first train being a TGV, there is a compulsory reservation... And the return looks even worse... Cost: CHF 80 for the return ticket until Moutiers.

Swissdiver -

www.sncf.com it shows all the regional connections for all saturdays up to (and beyond) 19th January from Geneva (Cornavin) over Chambery (1 change) for €27.10

www.sbb.ch are showing the TGV connections.

SBB shows the "Saturday" Regional connections the same as SNCF up to 8th December after which "Saturday" connections on SBB only show TGV whereas on SNCF the Regionals continue to be shown.

After 8th December (everyday) SBB no longer shows the same solutions as SNCF

Maybe a timetable thing as around 8th December is a favourite time of the year for timetable changes. Especially for Regional service info

giftzwerg,

Interesting... I admit I only checked with SBB. In Europe all the rail companies are changing their schedule on the same date, usually a Saturday night around December 10th. This year it will be on December 9th. Sometimes the interconnection between the various IT system doesn't work well around this date. Interestingly SBB shows these trains on January 18th... Prices are more or less the same (EUR 27.1 * 2 is almost the same as CHF 80 considering the latter includes the TGV reservation fee).

Nevertheless, while this remains the less expensive trip, it is by far the most tedious (4+ hours, 2-3 changes)...
