Driving from Geneva to Zug

I am taking my 18yr old to visit friends in Zug, we land in Geneva around 9pm on a Thurs and will be picking up a hire car Friday morning. The plan is to arrive in Zug Friday evening.

Can anyone suggest a quirky but not too expensive place to stay in Geneva and anything interesting to do on the route to Zug?

Gruyeres Village (http://www.la-gruyere.ch) is really worth a stop on the way!

Hotel: what is your budget, considering hotels are expensive in Geneva?

P.S.: In Switzerland, you are much better off NOT renting a car and travelling by trains. Check the schedule on www.rail.ch.

Thanks for the reply, I checked the trains and found I could get a car for roughly the price of one of us on the train, about £126.

The budget in Geneva is about £80 for the night, not sure if that is feasable?

http://www.hotel-bel-esperance.ch/ is a hidden gem: small rooms but the location is just fabulous. And the price will almost fit in your budget (breakfast is included though). But do book well in advance! And ask them where to park as they don't offer the facility.

Parking your car for the night in Geneva might jsut make the trains look a little better - OR get your car on the day you leave Geneva (you will get a free transit pass from the airport into town and then from your hotel for the 24hours you are staying there... so no additional costs in the city and canton of Geneva.

Places to visit from Geneva en route to Zug - there are many. I would opt for Bern. An easy drive from Geneva and then on to Zug- Lots to see and since the town is small a stop of 4 hours is plenty including time for a light lunch. See this:

If you prefer not to stop in a town, but to drive through the mountains, here is a possible route:

Geneva to Aigle (autoroute via Montreux)

From Aigle up through the vineyards and over the Pillon Pass

Gstaad

Zweisimmen

Spiez

to Interlaken

Then from there over the Brünig pass to Luzern

And on to Zug

A lovely day's drive with many (too many!) things to stop and see along the way. If this appeals to you tell me and I will provide more details!!

Thanks guys, I will check out the link to the hotel, thanks.

I like the idea of the mountain drive, many years ago I livedin Leysin and am temped to drag my daughter down memory lane, although I am sure it has changed an awful lot.

I know this is a very long shot but about 5 years ago we stayed in an amazing hotel up a back street, it reminded me of a rundown version of the house from Aristocats. I think it was within walking distance of the lake and the view was of a multi story carpark and small casino (I think)

Ring any bells?

I doubt that Leysin has changed much - it still looks to me as it looked in the '60's!

In which town is your "Aristocats" house? It would help people to think about it for you!
