Weekend trip from Geneva + activities

Hello there,

I'm looking for ideas for a weekend trip suited for a couple that has more to it than touring. Yes we would like to see the beautiful sights but we would also want if there was something else to go for for example the possibility of rafting, hang gliding, water parks, concerts etc.

If you know of any areas/cities that can be reached from Geneva through train or easyjet that are both tourist-worthy as well as filled with other nice activities then please leave a comment here.

Charmey might be a good bet for you. You can do adventurous airbourne things from Epagny aerodrome (a short bus ride away). There is a cable car from the village up into the local mountains. There are excellent thermal baths in the village - not truly geothermal, but you wouldn't know the difference (and indoor pool and an outdoor pool with bubbles and fountains, saunas, hammams and a plunge pool. You can hike down a gorge. A bus ride away is the chocolate factory at Broc. You can go to the Medieval town of Gruyeres which has a chateau, the HR Giger Museum and a demonstration cheese dairy.

To get there from Geneva, you take the train from Geneva to Palezieux, cross under the tracks via the subway and take the narrow gauge train to Bulle. At Bulle follow the bus signs to the attached bus station and catch the bus up to Charmey village.

Nightlife would be limited to local restaurants, but otherwise, I think it ticks the boxes.

Depends when you will be here, but the world famous Verbier Festival starts on 20 July and runs to 5 Aug. Fabulous concerts (4+ per day and some free each day) as well as a lot of music related activities, and great hiking etc.

www.verbierfestival,com

Verbier is also home to the highest outdoor sculptuire park in Europe at 2300m. See www.3-dfoundation.com

Verbier is in the Val de bagnes about 2 hrs drive or train from Geneva.

At the same time you could visit the Gianadda here in Martigny which is having a great summer exhibition of paintings from the Merzbacher collection - Renoirs, Degas, van gogh, Monet, Kandinsky etc. And also has an impressive sculpture garden and a vintage car museum. Next door (more or less) is the Museum of st Bernard dogs. And also many Roman ruins.

Another great weekend destination is the Chamonix valley, only an horus' drive from Geneva. Soaring mountains, good hiking, golf etc.

The Jungfrau area (http://www.jungfrau.ch/en/) offers nice possibilities including the FirstFlyer (jungfrau.ch/en/tourism/experiences/fun-activ…).

totally agree wtih Swissdiver - when we first moved to Geneva we did a weekend in the Jungfrau region and I fell in love with lauterbrunnen, especially the waterfalls and cliffs. If you do this, be sure to work in at least a morning or more at the Open Air Museum at Ballenberg. www.ballenberg.ch For anyone who is new to CH this is a fabulous place to explore the architecture of the country!!
