Best itinerary for 5-6 days in Switzerland

Hi, my husband and I are planning on spending 5-6 days in Switzerland next May/June 2015 as part of our 1 month trip to Europe. I am thinking I would like to spend some time in Basel as I need to spend 1 day to explore the town of Rohr, near Aargau,, as that is my great-grandfather's home town. My husband has never been to Switzerland so I need to maximise our days there to impress him with the beauty of the country. I would appreciate some help in planning an intineray to maximise our days. We do not need to spend strenuous days climbing high mountains, but are mainly interested in beautiful scenery, lakes, old towns etc. We do love train trips so would be happy to maximise that on our journey. We don't like moving around too much so would probably like to stay the whole time in one city and spread our wings from there.

Looking forward to your experience and advice.

From Basel, I would choose one base for your time in Switzerland. If you are interested in old towns and scenery than I would suggest you go to Luzern. There are a number of mountain peak excursion trips that you can make from there. These are a few websites for your perusal. Thanks

Switzerland has world's best train network, and its a small country, so you can visit almost anywhere from Basel. That said, though I would suggest spending a day in one of the beautiful valleys. The most impressive places for mountain scenery according to me would be -

1. Zermatt - but its far south and its best to stay there overnight.

2. Grindelwald - here also I would suggest spending a night in the valley, but its close enough for a day trip.

3. Davos and St Moritz.

If you want something close, Mt Titlis is impressive. There are gondolas to go all the way to top of mountain, and they have some ice/snow activities on the top. If its too much then Mt Pilatus is another alternative, but make sure to go on a clear day so that you can see the mountains around (sunny is often not same as clear here as it gets hazy).

I also really like Linthal / Brunnen and Elm valley, but May/June is still early, so depending on winter snowfall, these places might have snow.

I have many hikes with pictures on my blog http://tulika-swiss.blogspot.ch/ If you like any place in particular I can give you more details if its possible to get there without hiking.

Thank you Marb and Hiking01 for great information and lots to look at. I will look at all the leads and get back to you tomorrow. We are not so interested in hiking or going too high up a mountain but do enjoy beautiful scenery and lakes and old towns. I would like to visit the town of Colmar which which gives you an idea of the thing that interests us. Janice
