places to eat and drink in basel

Can anyone help us? We are trying to plan a break to Basel and would appreciate it if someone could give us some advise on places to eat and drink. We have a hotel in mind near the botanical gardens, but breakfast and meals aren't included. Are there plenty of places nearby where we could eat? And also somewhere to have a drink during the evening. Many thanks, Sue and John.

Near the botanical garden there isn't much around. But never mind. Basel isn't that big. As you are staying in a Basel Hotel you will be in possession of a free transort pass for public transport.

From tramstop Spalentor you can reach the center within 4 minutes by tram. Barfüsserplatz has lots of restaurants. For a small hunger I recommend there the Brötlibar, where you help yourself with small slices of toast topped with all kind of freshly made food, such as egg, asparagus, thuna, roastbeef or raw beef (tartare). Nearby Steinenvorstadt has got a lot of pubs, also a british one called Mr. Pickwick.

You can also have a nice walk from tramstop Universität, pass the nice restaurant "Harmonie" and stroll down the Spalenberg. Enjoy the old city center, the narrow lanes at Gemsberg and have dinner at Restaurant Schnabel (menue in english), at the corner Trillengässlein/ Rümelinsplatz.
