Rail from Zurich airport to St Moritz

We are arriving in Zurich and are wondering whether we have to take a train from the airport into Zurich to catch the st moritz train or whether it goes directly from the airport?

If we send our luggage ahead to st moritz by Swiss rail is that done at the airport or in Zurich?

We have also been told that we need to change trains at Chur or another stop which I cannot remember. Any recommendations?

Learn to use SBB website, please:

www.sbb.ch/en

from: Zuerich Airport

To: St Moritz

It covers all public transportation in Switzerland.

>If we send our luggage ahead to st moritz by Swiss rail is that done at the airport or in Zurich?

You can do either; obviously if you are at the airport, sending it from the airport makes more sense.

See above. Don't rely on recommendation from a forum, just have the SBB software plot the schedule.

You dont need to use raileurope for this, it's SBB, the Swiss train, offering the service. Details are here: sbb.ch/en/…fly-rail-baggage.html

You have to change either in Landquart or in Chur to the small gauche train to the Engadin St. Moritz area. If you are going back again (I mean not continue on the Bernina line to Lugano), try use the Vereina line (change in Landquart) for one way and the Albula line (change in Chur) for the other, so you avoid backtracking on the same line and will enjoy different landscapes.

Rail Europe is the last place most of us go for information on European rail trips or for information on rail services such as baggage. First, they are nothing more than a travel agent for the various national railways. Second, their database doesn't show all the possible timetables or services. It shows only a selection and it sometimes seems they show the ones that will make them the largest commission.

The baggage system is very easy to use. At the airport station, the baggage office is just to the right as you stand facing the tickets windows. You will need to have your ticket or pass to ship bags. If you ship your bags by 9AM, they will be in St. Moritz by 6PM that evening for a price of 22 Swiss francs per bag. If it is after 9 AM, they will be in St. Moritz at 6PM the next evening for 22 francs. If you can manage without by packing a day or two's clothing in a small bag you keep with you, you can have your bags 24 hours later for 11 Swiss francs per bag. Many of us here use the system and absolutely love it!

The changes listed on Swiss Rail sometimes seem to be tight but they are not usually very difficult particularly if you have shipped most of your luggage. Just be at the door of the train ready to alight when it pulls into the station and when he checks your ticket ask the conductor which platform for your connecting train so that you aren't hunting for it.

Hope this helps.

Hi, Fly Rail baggage has its drawbacks. First, you cannot use it on the return on many international carriers including all US carriers due to security requirements. Then there's the issue of knowing your bags arrived in Switzerland. I like to know that the airline actually got my bags to Switzerland and got them there in good condition with nothing missing. You know that the airline would deny all damage/theft if the bag goes straight to Swiss Rail! I don't mind the extra ten minutes it takes to pick up my luggage, check it over for damage and peek inside for riffling before taking it to the baggage office of Swiss Rail.

There are also tails of the Swiss Rail Fly Rail baggage tag being removed or torn off bags before they arrive in Switzerland so the bag isn't given to Swiss Rail. Then you are in St. Moritz and your bag is in Zurich! One fellow had to go back to Zurich to get his bag!

Hope this helps you to decide how you want to do this.

BUT, according to SBB, raileurope (by far not my peferred information site) IS the OFFICIAL SALES POINT in the USA. Check here: http://files.gadmin.ch/49267

I talk here about "FLY RAIL Baggage" service, and NOT "Fast Baggage".

Regarding SBB's RAIL FLY BAGGAGE Service:

The CORRECT pick up time for ST. Moritz you find here (see third table from top yellow coulumn): sbb.ch/content/…file48.spooler.download.pdf

Actually, the delivery is quite faster: As long as you do not land after 20:00 (8pm) your baggage will be in St. Moritz at 09:00 (9 am) next day LATEST. And if you airplane lands before 13:00 (1 PM) it will arrive at the same day until 21:00!

All information about all baggage services by SBB can be found here: sbb.ch/en/…baggage.html

The baggage service is very reliable. It also costs money - 22frs/bag. And you must show a train ticket when giving the SBB your bags.

The reason one changes in Chur or Landquart for the St Moritz train is the "small gauge" track - ie narrower! There are a lot of private rail companies here with different gauge tracks than the standard main line trains...
