Travelling by train from Milan to Perugia

Hi, am planning to visit Perugia in late September 2011. Am arriving with family (4 in total) at Milan Malpensa just after noon on a Saturday. What's the best (most economical) way to get from Milan to Perugia for us?

1. Re: Travelling by train from Milan to Perugia

It is some 500 km from Malpensa airport to Perugia, so the journey will be neither quick nor particularly cheap. The journeys I can readily find take between 5h16 and 6 hours, costing between €67.55 and €73.55.

You can get train times and costs from www.trenitalia.it/homepage_en.html but it is unlikely you will be able to book through this site, as it seldom accepts cards issued outside Europe. If you have problems, just buy the train tickets in Italy. Use a travel date of next Saturday to get costs on the local trains you will need to take from Florence to Perugia.

If you see a journey involving a change of train at "MI N CA", the Trenitalia site is suggesting you take a local train to Cadorna station in Milan, and then use the Metro to get to Milan Central station. For these journeys, it would be easier to take a bus from Malpensa direct to Central station.

The cheapest fare between Milan and Perugia by train is as follows:

Depart Malpensa Airport train station 16:22 LE NORD airport train

Arrive Milano Centrale 17:05

Depart Milano Centrale 17:45 Trenitalia Intercity (IC) DIRECT train

Arrive Perugia 23:16

Standard "base" fare in second class: 44.50 Euros for both segments.

NOTE: The IC train from Milano Centrale at 17:45 goes direct to Perugia (via Bologna and Florence), but with no changes or connections.

Because your arrival by plane is around 12 noon, you would be able to take an earlier train to Milano Centrale, connecting to a high-speed Frecciarossa train to Florence, connecting to a regionale train to Perugia. The total fare for this solution would be 69.55 Euros for all segments.

You may qualify for a small discount with the "Familia" fare, as long as you have at least one child under the age of 12:

www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp…

Adults get a 20% discount, while chldren under 12 get a 50% discount. Even without the "Familia" fare (which is capacity controlled), children under 12 ALWAYS get a 50% discount, and toddlers under 4 ALWAYS travel free. Remember to ask for these discounts if they apply to your situation.

Another cheap train, with an arrival time three hours earlier than GAC's 16.22 suggestion, is to leave Milano Centrale at 14.50, changing trains in Arezzo. This journey costs €40.25, and to get to the 14.50, take one of the €7 trains from Malpensa to Milano Centrale to get the cheapest overall fare.

To see this option on http://trenitalia.it/homepage_en.html look at Malpensa-Milan and Milan-Perugia journeys separately. But you'll only see the Malpensa-Milan fares for the coming week as they are NA online after that for those trains, though they don't change.

I like this solution. But here are some caveats:

1. To see this solution on the Trenitalia website, you have to click on the red icon "all solutions" at the bottom left of the screen when searching from Milan to Perugtia. Otherwise, this solution won't appear (which is why I missed it when I posted my earlier reply).

2. You have a very tight connection at Arezzo: only 14 minutes. Since this is an IC train from Milan to Arezzo, there is a fair chance of missing the connection. If this happens, the NEXT train from Arezzo to Perugia departs TWO hours later. Even so, you would arrive in Perugia 54 minutes earlier than if you took the 17:45 train from Milano Centrale.

3. When you add the 7-Euro fare from Malpensa Airport to Milano Centrale, the total fare for this solution is 47.25 Euros.

There also is a bus (4 days a week) from Milan to Perugia at 16.45, which takes only 6 hours and is direct. http://www.sulga.it/orari/perugia_milano.pdf

To reach the departure point (Famagosta metro stop) take any train from Malpensa (going to either Milan's central station Cadorna station), hence a short underground ride to Famagosta.
