Hi all! Overwhelmed trying to whittle down options for our May trip. We are arriving in Rome airport at 2:30p, renting car, and heading to a hilltop agriturismo on mt. subasio above Assisi (Le Mandrie di San Paolo). We imagine we won't have much time after travel and check in to do much but enjoy a meal and turn in early that first day. But then, we have 4 full days with car before needing to be back at airport hotel around 9-10pm Friday night, for early morning flight out.
With such a short trip, we want to be strategic. We've done cities, churches, etc plenty in previous trips, so while exploring hill towns will of course be on tap, we are hoping to include some more countryside this time too. Love to get a few country walks or bike rides in. The final day (Friday) will be spent driving slowly closer to Rome, so we will likely choose a town like Orvieto, Terni, Narni or Todi to amble about for the day, and have our final meal in before heading back to Rome hotel that night. (been to charming Orv before, but would go again if this is most recommended...know nothing of the others, but they all appear to be on the way back from Assisi area.)
On the 3 days we'll be in Assisi area, we'll likely hit Assisi proper after tourist hours a couple times, since it's right there. But does anyone have suggestions for some especially beautiful walks, drives or towns for our 3 days in the area we simply shouldn't miss? We love photography, history, vistas, old roads, very old buildings, parks...anything photogenic..we don't want to rush, just want a sampler of awesome Umbria. Seems driving/parking will be a challenge so I'm gathering info upfront to have maps prepared. (though in the end we'll follow no plan, going with flow til we have to be back at airport. that's our only 'must.') ANY advice appreciated. MOLTE grazie!
