Best Place to Stay?

We will be visiting in April 2011 for four days. We will have a car, and would like to particularly see Assisi, Orvieto, Montepulciano.

Can you suggest the best location to use as a base? And perhaps a particular hotel/lodging?

Many thanks

www.hotelpriori.it, www.hotelsigna.com, www.primaveraminihotel.com in Perugia.

From this base you can visit:

in Umbria Perugia, Lago Trasimeno, Assisi, Spello, Spoleto,, Orvieto, Gubbio,

in Tuscany Montepulciano, Chiusi, Cortona, Arezzo, Pienza.

Because you will have a car, it is best to stay in Assisi or one of the other smaller villages - Montefalco; Bevagna; Spello; etc...

Perugia is a nightmare to drive in and to find parking. Seriously! There are areas where you can park -but there are large areas where it is illegal to drive in/through during certain hours and you will be ticketed.

If you want to visit Perugia, stay in one of the outer areas and take a bus or train into the city for the afternoon. They have the new tram so you could park your car in the lower parking area and take the tram into the historic part of the city.

If you only have the four days in Umbria - why spend them trying to find your way around Perugia in a car? :)
