We're staying in Spoleto for a week early in September and will be hiring a car so will want to visit a few places outside of Spoleto - what places would you recommend for a day trip?

Also, we're staying in an apartment on the Rocca De Perugini near Porta Fuga - is that a good location in Spoleto? And are there any nice bars and restaurants nearby?

Thanks

Tracy,

I think obvious places to visit would be Trevi, Spello, Bevagna, and Assisi.

I think you are in a great location, right on the edge of the historic center. There are many good bars and restaurants in Spoleto. Very close is Osteria del Trivia, about 20 meters straight out the front door. There is a nice restaurant about 100 meter out the back door, you go through the garage and make a couple turns, ask the apartment owner. My favorite is Osteria di Matto off of Piazza Mercanto. the menu is set, last year it was 16euro, and they bring 'tastings' of about a dozen dishes. The owner Fillipo will keep you entertained.

We are doing basically the same visit, also in september. We have done some reading, asked some TA advise and are planning to do some/most of the following: Montefaco, Foligni, Bevagna - I believe there is a wine festival in the area in September - around the 16th,17th. Narni, Amelia, possibly Todi, Norcia.

If you haven't been to Assissi or Orvieto they should both be on your short list of places to visit. We also intend to do a day or two in and around Spoleto.Friday is market day in Spoleto

A good web site is initaly.com, also Slowtravel.com

enjoy
