Renting a car in italy |
|
We're planning our first trip to Italy next month. We plan on renting a car in Florence, staying a week in an agritourismo in Tuscany and exploring the hill towns. We'd then like to return the car in Rome. Any advice on car reantal locations? Can we pick-up/drop-off in cities or does it need to be airports? Any thoughts appreciated. Report as inappropriate |

I would recommend renting the car through AutoEurope - they have plenty of locations throughout Italy. No you do not need to rent at the airport and you can drop off at a different location than you rented the car. Also - they guarantee the price in US dollars - they have unlimited mileage and insurance is included. The only additional charges are for a road tax - which is approx - $2.75/day with a ten day max. and a charge if you would like additional drivers - but you can decided that when you pick up the car. here is the link for the autoeurope: Report as inappropriate

You can rent from Hertz or other companies in Florence at a couple of locations. We've usually rented at the airport and returned to the airport in Rome to avoid driving in the cities. This year we're going to rent in Florence at the location just down the street from Santa Maria Novella station. We were going to drop it off in Rome at Fiumicino but decided to drop it off in Orvieto and take the train from there to Naples and continue to the Amalfi Coast. The train station is right next to where we'll drop the car off. Check all the companies. I've rented twice from Autoeurope and have been very pleased both times. This time, Hertz just came out to be less expensive. jerryott@mail.com Report as inappropriate

Have been doing a bit of research on this myself. I agree with the above, Hertz comes out best for me too. Report as inappropriate

Avis turn out best for me . I'll be renting from them in Florence durind the middle of May. The reason I liked them most was that I could rent an Alfa Romeo and I wanted an Italian car while we driving around Tuscany. It just seemed more appropiate than driving some GM product or even a German car.None of the other company's offered Italian cars.
