Rail from Naples to San Gimignano?

As part of our three months in Europe, we plan for only five nights in Rome and Naples. We have booked to use San Gimignano and Venice as our two bases to explore Northern Italy for two weeks. 1. How do we get from Naples to San Gimignano? 2. Are public buses easily available from San Gimignano to Siena, Lucca, etc.?

1. You take a fast train from Naples to Florence, and change there for a bus to San Gimignano.

2. There are buses to Florence and Siena, but otherwise public transport in this area is sparse and timed to meet the needs of local residents rather than tourists. If you want to explore the countryside around San Gimignano, you will need a rental car.

Thanks to you two guys for your advice and info. Have either of you guys heard of Casa del Poggio near SG? We were informed that it is on a hill overlooking SG. Is it walking distance (with luggage) from SG?

The only Casa del Poggio I can find in Tuscany is 35 km from San Gimignano: www.posarellivillas.com/_1023__index.phtm

There is another Casa del Poggio near the village of San Gemini, but that is in the Province of Terni: www.palazzosantiterzi.it/casadelpoggio.htm

Can you provide a link for your Casa?

The family villa, as shown on the site, seems very close to San Gim.

For some reason, that one did not show up in my Google search.

Using the GPS co-ordinates given on the villa's web site, it is about 1.4 km from the southern gate of San Gimignano, up a fairly steep hill. I would not want to walk it.

If you want to explore the countryside around San Gimignano, you are going to need a car.

As indicated, you need a bus to San G and I am not sure about getting to your accommodation using a bus. There are not many taxis either.

The train goes only as far as Poggibonsi, below San G, from which you would again need a bus. Be aware that most towns in the area were built on top of hills for defensive reasons and almost all towns therefore require a walk uphill if approached by train. There are some buses but using them will restrict your hours of adventuring.

Don't forget that many places close over lunchtime for several hours.

Not only are most towns up a hill from the station, if there is a station (rail service in Chianti is sparse, to put it nicely), but the hill can be very long and steep, the road narrow and winding. No sidewalks, not made for walking, much less with luggage! If you really want to explore, rent a car!
