Spending a Saturday in Pisa

We want to visit Pisa for a day. Of course we want to see the leaning tower and all that has to offer. I understand that there is a market on Saturdays that is at Piazza della Vettovaglie, just off Via Borgo Stretto. Wondering if this is something we can walk to after our time at the tower.

Once we arrive in Pisa, is there some place we can pick up a local map?

Thanks so much.

Be sure to book your Leaning Tower tickets 12-20 days online prior to your visit to guarantee a climb window. Click on the first "Here" after the UK flag to get to the actual booking site.

The walk to Piazza Vettovaglie is just over 1/2 a mile away. Allow 15 minutes to walk there. You can check out the walk on Google Map.

For free tourist map, find a touring information center, ask a hotel or an attractions.

Oh, brother - another tourist who did not bother to read up on driving in Italy and the areas (ZTLs) where one is not permitted to drive and if one does, expect your license to be photographed. How pathetic to warn people off an entire country just because you Richard, couldn't be bothered to read up on what it is involved in driving in Italy.

To the OP, if driving - here's a good primer on driving in Italy and what to look out for (and if you are not fully certain, just do some more googling) there is a real effort being made to preserve these ancient cities from the harm from pollution and traffic and so they restrict much of the city centers to drivers without permits:

No need to pay heed to someone who is a wee bit hysterical about having been fined and is just looking to blame anyone but himself.

Umm..would have loved to have read post #3 before it was removed by TA. Momcat....thanks for your concern. I did read up about driving in Italy, and it's for that reason that is will be the first vacation that we have taken that we will NOT have a car. Our trip from Florence to Pisa will be by train, and that is why I posted this question about being able to get around Pisa easily and find our way to that market at Piazza delle Vettovaglie.

Hi

There is a lot more to Pisa than the Leaning Tower although it is indeed a fabulous site. You should just wander the streets and see what you find. There are some lovely shops and eateries on the Borgo Stretto and a fabulous ice cream shop in the Piazza Garibaldi. You should have a look at the beautiful Piazza Cavalieri and also hit the shops on the Via del Corso, I loved it in Pisa and i am sure you will have a lovely day.
