book online or buy at counter to Pisa from Firenze SMN??

I am visiting Pisa the leaning tower in Feb 2013 and will be setting off from Firenze SMN. I have booked most of my train tickets Milan--> Venice --> Florence -->Rome, the only thing left out is frm Florence--> Pisa--> Florence (not staying over at Pisa)

Someone have advised me to get the tickets at the counter as it is cheaper than booking online. Just wondering if tickets will be sold out as I need to return to Florence on the same day..and how much is it getting from the counter?

There is absolutely no point in buying in advance, as there are no advance reductions and no seat reservations so trains cannot sell out.

Also, online tickets are OK only for four hours from the booked time, and can only be bought online within seven days of travel. While tickets bought in Italy are OK for two months, and for six hours after validation (time/date-stamping) which is required before boarding.

Buy at easy-to-use multilingual ticket machines to avoid lines at counter.

As Perilizia says, these tickets are best bought at the train station. Don't forget to stamp them in the machine at the head of the track. There's a large fine if you forget to stamp them. You can buy the return ticket at the same time, but don't stamp it until you're ready to return.

The bus you want from Pisa Centrale station is the LAM Rossa (Red) http://www.cpt.pisa.it/orari/pisa/n4077p1.htm

Make sure you have tickets for the bus in advance, usually from a bar or tabacconist shop. Unless things have changed recently, the buses do not sell tickets. Again, use the machine on the bus to date stamp them.

Pisa buses will happily sell you a ticket on board at €1.50 for 70 minutes.

If you buy in advance, the same duration costs €1.10, or alternatively a 240 minute ticket for €1.75 could be of interest for a visit to the tower as it would probably last long enough to get you back again.

That is interesting and is changed from when we were there years ago. Then it was no ticket, no ride.
