Lucca parking for Corso Garibaldi

We will be in Lucca 10 nights arriving Saturday 25 May. We will have a car for day trips to outlying areas not easily reachable by train or bus.

We are renting an apartment from Mrs Sonia at Corso Garibaldi 80 (anyone who has stayed there we welcome your comments) just inside south walls near train station.

What is the recommended parking location? Mazzini? Carducci? Some days we will be in Lucca and won't use the car; other days we will take day trips. If we buy a 50 eu monthly pass for Mazzini, can that be purchased at Mazzini by credit card? Will we have a problem finding a space at Mazzini on a Saturday morning when we arrive due to market day? Or should we just take it day by day?

Thanks!

Carducci will be closer to you. The monthly passes have to be purchased at the Metro office which is outside the walls at Via delle Città Gemelle n. 162, S.Anna. They are open until 12 pm on Saturdays and 8-4 M-F.

Their website (Italian only) is at: http://www.metrosrl.it/

Thanks TAB. A few more ?s on this topic: if we arrive on Saturday, with Luccaport closed Saturday and Sunday, since we can't buy tickets until Monday, seems we should just pay the daily rate to park and not buy the 50 euro monthly parking pass for our 10 night stay, right? Will parking at Carducci require crossing the ring road on foot to reach Corso Garibaldi? I also have read about free parking (white outlines) around the Stazione; is it crazy to think we'll find one of those spots open? Also wondering if the Mazzini lot is preferable/(cooler) since it is underground. Looks like a fairly easy 15 minute walk, mostly along the Mura, from Mazzini to Corso Garibaldi.

I don't know what you mean about Luccaport.

The €50 pass pays for itself after 3 days so it would still be a good buy for the rest of your stay. I'm not sure you can find free parking around the station. You can pay €5/day on Saturday and Sunday at Carducci. You would have to cross the ring road but there are lights and an underpass. It's not difficult.

15 minutes sounds about right for the walk from Mazzini. You can park there on Saturdays when the market is on. The entrance route is just not as direct as other days. It is well marked with a barricade that forces you into the parking area.

One suggestion is that when you arrive on the Saturday, if you can't find free parking at the train station, use car park Carducci (you do have to cross the ring road but there is a pedestrian crossing on the right of the car park exit) as the charge is only 5 euro per day on Saturdays and Sundays. If you don't buy the abbonamento/pass and pay as you come and go you then have the choice to park in whichever car park you choose.

Cross posting with TAB. Just to add we have stayed, and will again this summer, in an apartment just off Corso Garibaldi and use car park Mazzini.

We also are staying on Corso Garibaldi ,also through Sonia, and we received lots of info from her when we booked the apartment.

If you contact HER around twelve days before your arrival , as she has requested in her booking confirmation, then she can sort out the parking I'm sure , although the information from Mesh and the other experts is always worth looking at.

Another tip is that when we have done a big shop at Carrefour or Esselunga supermarkets, and don't fancy carrying the shopping through the city from Park Mazzini, we park just outside the Porta San Pietro entrance to the city on Viale Regina Margherita to run it back to the apartment. It's only 20 cents for the first hour and literally a couple of minutes walk to Corso Garibaldi.

Just to note that as you turn off Viale Regina Margherita the 20 or so parking spaces immediately in front of the Porta San Pietro entrance are 1 euro per hour not the 20 cents ones!
