parma to florence via Lucca and Pisa

I am planning on leaving Parma and next overnight stop will be Florence for 4 nights. I want to visit Pisa and Lucca is it a good idea to visit these 2 towns while in route to Florence. Would rather not do a day trip from Florence since I have alot of other places I would like to see while in Florence.

The train journey from Parma to Pisa or Lucca takes between 3 and 4 hrs. The onward journey from Lucca to Florence is around one and a half hours.

Do you think you could see all you want in both Pisa and Lucca in the intervening time?

Though possible, it may not be a good idea. For train times see http://www.trenitalia.com/homepage_en.html - to see all fares use a date this week.

You can get from Parma to Florence in 1.5 to 2 hours, with a few direct trains but usually with a change at Bologna.

From Parma to Pisa will take around three hours with a change, Pisa to Lucca 30 minutes, and Lucca-Florence over an hour. So 4-5 hours on trains, plus time putting your baggage in and out of left luggage offices, plus the time moving around within Pisa and Lucca.

www.trenitalia.com will show you the times, as noted above by Joanna.

You could get to Lucca by 11 AM and spend, what, three hours there? (Let's assume you're going to eat lunch as well as walk about town a bit.) In Lucca you'd need to drag your luggage around with you as there is no left luggage office at the train station.

The local train from Lucca to Pisa Centrale takes a half hour, plus time to get you to the Piazza dei Miracoli/Leaning Tower (a little over a mile). There is a closer train station, Pisa S. Rossore, but if you use this one you'd need to drag your luggage around Pisa as well. At least Pisa Centrale has a left luggage office.

If you get to the tower area around 3 PM and spend an hour there, plus another 15 minutes to get back to the train station, you can be on a 4:30 train to Florence that gets you there at 5:30 PM.

In other words, you can do it, but does it sound remotely pleasant?

There is luggage storage, for a fee, at the tourist office on Piazzale G Verdi just inside the walls of Lucca, opposite the bus station.

Good to know about the luggage storage at the tourist office in Lucca. That's a little under a mile from the train station, so the OP needs to factor in time to get there and get back, plus time to drop off and collect their bags.

Apparantly there is also a left luggage office at the Porta Elisa tourist office: comune.lucca.it/turismo/centri_accoglienza

elstravels, this was not directed at the OP (don't think they have nearly enough time to do what they want ) I just put the information out there for anyone else that may be reading this thread.

The Porta Elisa tourist office is small and only open from 1st April to 30th September, it also closes for lunch break 13.30 hrs to 14.30 hrs and is closed on Tuesdays. The office on Piazzale G Verdi is open all year round and doesn't close for lunch.

Good choice. With this option you can use the Pisa S. Rossore station between Pisa and Lucca, which should save you some time and walking.
