Regional Train Travel in Tuscany

We plan to stay three weeks in Lucca, doing day trips to Pisa, Cinque Terre, Viareggio, Florence, Siena, etc. What is the most economical way to purchase or handle travel by train? We are a senior, one adult, and a 16 year old traveling together. Since we are staying right by the train station, I would love to be able to have a pass which would allow us to hop on about every other day or so. I can't determine if it would be cheaper to buy tickets as we need them, since they are relatively short regional trips.

There is no pass that would be cheaper than ordinary tickets on these local trains. Just buy the tickets in Italy. You can buy at a train station ahead of travel. Before you get on the train, you must time-stamp the tickets in a machine at the station.

You can get train times and costs from www.trenitalia.com/homepage_en.html using a travel date in the next 7 days to see costs on these local trains. You will all pay the normal adult fare.

If you don't want to buy as you go, you could have one session in the train station (at booking office or ticket machine) buying up all the tickets you want. They are OK on any train for two months until stamping, after which they are valid for six hours.

Alternatively, there is a travel agency on Piazza San Michele that is extremely accommodating with assisting in multiple train journey plans. Lovely lady who speaks great English (usually at desk most distant to front door) and is very helpful and interested in your plans. She'll just print all your tickets and have you ready for various adventures. Or...you can stop in more than once if your plans are variable. Prices the same as booking at the train station.
