Does this transportation arrangement make sense?

We take the train from Rome to Pisa which arrives at Pisa train station at 7pm.

We have a 2 night stay in Lucca.

1) So we want to rent a car to go from Pisa to Lucca. But the car rental is only open that day of arrival at Pisa airport.

2) How can we go from Pisa train station to airport to rent our car? How much would the taxi cost?

3) Once we rent the car at airport can we drive to see the leaning tower of Pisa from the outside and then drive to Lucca?

We would be traveling with a 7 year old so if this is too crazy then let us know.

Forget the taxi. Take a train from Pisa Centrale to the airport. It takes about five minutes and costs almost nothing.

You can drive to the "Field of MIracles" with the cathedral and baptistery - two of the greatest masterpieces of the late Middle Ages in Europe, the Campo Santo, or what is left of it after we Americans bombed it for no reason, and, oh yes, as I remember there is a tower there, too.

It is too crazy. Arriving at 7:00 PM in Pisa...an hour to rent a car...an hour or two to drive and see the tower...another hour to drive to Lucca..."if" all goes well in a place that you're totally unfamiliar with? And it will be dark or getting dark...and you will be checking into your hotel in Lucca at say 11:00 o'clock at night! Just to see the Leaning Tower...Holy Cow...:-).

- Could you take a train directly to Lucca?

- Could you rent a car in Lucca?

- Then you could go and see the Leaning Tower in Pisa as a half-day trip on one of the days you have at your disposal. Trains from Lucca to Pisa do the trip in 1/2 hour.
