Early arrival in Florence - what to do

My husband and I will be taking the overnight train from Munich to Florence, arriving in Florence at 6am on Monday, February 25. Our hotel by the duomo does not open until 9am for us to be able to store our bags. Does anyone have suggestions for what we can do that early in the morning before we can check in. Please keep in mind well have our luggage with us (2 carry on suitcases and a small duffle bag).

Deposit your luggage at the railway station and walk to the duomo and/piazza della signaoria and/or ponte vecchio It'll still be dark probably but very few people will be about and you'll have the whole place to yourselves.

Thanks. Since it'll be dark when we get there, is there a good place to go to see the sunrise and get good pictures?

Try to get hold of a map and walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo, I love cities in the early morning just as things are stirring. I believe the busses start running at about 6:00, so you could take a No. 12 or 13 from the station if you don't feel like walking.

Can you double check the times at the hotel? It is very unusual for a hotel to have 'opening hours' unless it is a tiny family operation - most have a 24h desk and should be able to store your bags, even though you won't be able to check-in so early.

Apologies if you have already done this, but it does seem strange.

take the 12 bus up to Piazzale Michelanagelo (with or without luggage) and watch sunrise from there -- this is a stunning view of the town and if you don't have your luggage with you, you can take a leisurely stroll back down

don't forget San Miniato up the hill beyond the Piazzale and one of the most lovely churches in Florence -- stunning views across its graveyard from the front of the church, lovely altar carvings and mosaics

if the left luggage is open at SMN you can stash stuff there for a few hours and you can take the bus up the hill from there -- there are a couple of places at the Piazzale where you can get coffee and breakfast while enjoying the view

Thanks for the suggestions. And yes, the hotel is a small B&B. but as long as we can stash bags at the train station for a few hours, that makes for a great option. Thanks again everyone.

Oh I would just wander the streets, visit the Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Signoria and enjoy the opportunity to have them to yourself (well almost!)
