Day trip from Rome

Is a day trip from Rome possible? If so, we would be taking the train so how early do they depart and how late do they return? Is it safe traveling at night on the train and how long would the train ride take?

Thanks

D're:

This one's a no brainer. Trains leave and return as early as 6 am to 10 pm. Make sure that you take the Eurostar which takes slightly under two hours. Very safe, Very clean. Do not take the inter-City trains, not because of safety concerns, but just because it will take you 3+ hours and that throws off your schedule. If you leave Rome at 7:30 you get into Florence around 9:30. You can walk around see the Duomo, Medici Chapels, Uffizzi, The Academy, Ponte Vecchio and have a bite (or two) all in one day. Although someone may tell you that you should spend at least two days doing all those things, it is very realistic to do a day trip and see all of them. I actually prefer Florence to Rome. Have fun.
