Private guide-- florence and Tuscany

Can someone recommend a knowledgable, reliable private guide with a sense of humor? My daughter, daughter-in-law and her mother will be there in May, 2013. We want a day in Florence, wine country tour, day to Cinque Terre, day to Siena. It would be great to look forward to seeing a terrific person each morning to escort us in the Tuscany area.

If it were me, I would buy a couple of good guide books to give them. If you want something with a sense of humor, it's hard to beat Mary McCarthy's "Stones of Florence". I'd also give them the Blue Guide to Florence, the Blue Guide to Tuscany, and the Michelin Red Guide for Italy.

They'll learn a whole lot more, see a whole lot more, and save you a bundle of money.

But that's just me.

Look to the right "Top Questions", i.e. Day trip(s), there's some useful information and links. Also, try the search bar above the posts.

The Cinque Terre is not all that easily accessible by car, so for that reason I always recommend Giovanni Sirabella who knows the back roads there extremely well. His English is very good. http://www.sunflower-tours.com

For Sienna and wine tours I recommend Sergio Cecherelli - he English is perfect http://www.scenicwinetoursintuscany.com/

Angela Saltafuori does a half-day walking tour of Florence tuscanwinetours.net/walkingtourofflorence.htm but there are many specialist companies who do Florence tours of varying levels of sophistication.

Sense of Humor? You've got to go with Eugene Martinez (American but long-standing resident of Florence) for the Florentine portion of your planning. He'll wow those gals, perhaps include his wonderful partner Chef Antonio Albani in the planning, and give them a whirl they'll never forget. Meeting his smiling face on a morning in Florence is a rare treat.

Checkout Alessandro Cammilli, he is fantastic, my family just used him for a day trip in Tuscany and he was fantastic, it was one if my favorite days in Italy. Email: alecamma@hotmail.com

He has a website too, super clean van, prompt, very knowledgable and super funny, he lives in Florence

We were in just your position in February, trying to choose a reliable and knowledgeable guide for the Tuscany leg of our Italy trip. After much research we went with Slow Days tours from Florence - initially booking a small group tour and then a private tour for one day. Their reviews give a good indication of what to expect-

Be certain that you know what the tour will include. I went on a tour once that turned out to be more of a transport service. Yes, we did visit all the places listed in the tour's description but the "guide" was really a driver who gave us virtually no information, dropped us off in an area and picked us up at a designated time. If you want a guide to provide a tour of a specific town or an inside visit of a museum or historic building, be certain that's included in the tour.

Do some research on your own so that the tour can be tailored to your interests.
