Pisa to Florence to Venice by train...help! |
|
I am really enjoying reading all these posts! I am off to Florence on Monday 8th, flying into Pisa. I want to wander around Pisa for a few hours then catch the train to Florence. I'm staying that night and half a day in Florence (at least a full 24 hours) and then catching a train up to Venice. I believe I will have to change in Bologna....does anyone have any helpful information on this? I've never been to Italy before and I am travelling alone (hence the short trip) so I am a little apprehensive. I need step by step instructions! Thanks for any help. Kate. |

First off, the Search box in the upper left corner of this page is there for exactly this type of question. You could enter in there "Pisa to Florence train" Florence to Venice train" etc. and get myriad responses with good info to help you. Quickly I will tell you that it is a simple route for you. Pisa to FLorence is a bit over an hour - no change of trains from Pisa Centrale station to Florence. From Florence to Venice is about 3.5 hours by Eurostar and no need to change trains here either . If you take the regional (ie: slower trains) or IC (Intercity) train then it's possible that you might have to change. No biggie - the stations are small and well marked and you will have no problems making the change. Save the trouble though and just take the Eurostar - fast, safe and comfortable and only a few euros more than IC. Really worth it. Don't bother with 1st class anyway - get 2nd class...gets there just as fast. Use Trenitalia website to get info - look for English option for translation. www.trenitalia.com One thing...just be sure to VALIDATE your ticket before you get on any train or bus in Italy! There will be clearly marked yellow boxes on the platforms - just pop the ticket in before you board and it will stamp date and time on it. Fine is very high if you get caught with unstamped ticket so don't! On busses often the machine is on the bus itself - stamp after you board. This is an easy and quite safe journey to take between these cities so don't worry about it. I have below two links to one day itineraries for Florence and Venice that may be helpful to you. Gives you a good structure and direction to your wanderings in each city. No problem - use the trenitalia site and you'll get by just fine. No need to change from Florence to Venice if you take a eurostar. If you take a IC, or some other train, be sure to check which train station in Florence your train departs from. Usually it's not Santa maria Novella, but Campo di marte, which is a short taxi drive away from the centre. Do not use Firenze Rifredi which is much more out of the way. In Venice, you need Venezia Santa Lucia station. Enjoy!

Thanks so much for your excellent help, I feel a lot more relaxed about it now! You definitely know your stuff! It all seems straightforward enough that even I can do it ;-) Really appreciate you taking the time to reply. Kate.

Hi Kate, it is really straightforward. I am sure Liverpool station is much more humongous than any of those mentioned. Venice Santa lucia is an end station which makes it easier as well. Enjoy!
