Tuscany with a Toddler

My wife and I are spending a week in Tuscany in October with our (then) 1 year old daughter. We are looking for recommendations for a base please?

We want easy rail (or bus for shorter journeys) access to Pisa (airport) and the major Tuscan cities and sights. We mostly want to relax and soak up the atmosphere, and want things to be as relaxed as possible.

This will be our fourth trip to Italy but our first to Tuscany. We're looking for a room with a cot for the baby, whether hotel or self catering we don't mind.

Thank you!

Our daughter and son in law took their then 18 month old son to Florence for a week, prior to the arrival of #2 and simply enjoyed their stay and highly recommend the city as a base with kids. Big enough that there is so much to see and do, and small enough that you can get back to your lodgings many, many times a day to rest and take care of the child's needs. Easy enough to get a bus or train to visit the near by cities and town. Great food. In fact we all returned with their now family of two kids and had a great time. The kids, 5 and 3 now loved it. It is a stressless place to base yourself.
