It depends on your interests. Florence is a big city with art and architecture; Greve is a small town for visiting the Tuscan countryside. My choice would be Greve, but you may have different priorities.

I think you will not be able to pick up a rental car in Greve, but anyway you will need one if you stay there. Three-day rentals do not cost much more than one-day.

Do not even *think* of trying to drive into Florence. The whole of the centre is prohibited to visitors' cars, and there are many posts from people who have accidentally driven into this area, or in a bus lane, and have been hit with multiple €100 fines months later.

thanks sydneynick.our concern is in the getting from florence to greve in the first place and that there is not a rental car place there, sure this is an easy problem but am getting very confused with all the reading we are doing.

You can pick up a rental car in Florence. Ask the agent for directions on how to leave the city without entering a prohibited area.

Drop the car at Florence airport and take a taxi (€20) or a bus from there to the main train station. Or keep the car and drop it at your next destination.

I'd also vote for Greve. There's an excellent bus service from Greve right into the centre of Florence and that makes a day trip much more relaxing. There are private car rentals in Greve - just ask at the tourist information office or in the town hall or at Bar Lepanto. Or, as advised by sydneynick, you can pick up a car from the Florence airport. However, to my way of thinking the bus is simpler, with the car just for a day or two of country excursions from Greve.
