Tuscany by car

We are coming to Italy to see our daughter who is studying abroad in Castiglion Fiorentino. We were wondering if it is easy for Americans to rent a car and drive around the countryside. We want to go to Assissi and maybe Sienna and San Gimignano. We're thinking about staying in Castiglion Fiorentino and venturing out. Any suggestions? Are we crazy?

Driving in big cities in Italy is very difficult. Driving along country roads in Tuscany is no more difficult than driving along country roads in the USA.

You will need a car to explore this area. Public transport is sparse and is times to meet the needs of local residents and school children rather than tourists.

Wanda, rest assured that you are not crazy. :)

Driving around the countryside in Italy is no different from driving in Texas. Get a good map and a portable GPS with Italy maps downloaded onto it (practice with the GPS a bit before you leave for your holiday), reserve your car in advance, preferably through AutoEurope (google the name and call them), and have a marvelous time.

You do need to know about the limited traffic zones operated in most Italian urban settlements though. Read about them here:

But don't be put off driving by the zones, they really are easily managed (excepting Florence) if you know all about them.

Great! Thanks for all the nice replies, I do believe we are going to go for it! I like the idea of being able to pull over and take pictures or stop if we see something interesting.

Thanks again for your help!
