To pre-book or not?

Is it best to pre-book hotels in Italy, or can you just turn up and find something?

it depends of the time when you travel. In August for example it can hard to find something plus almost everything becomes overpriced.

Same thing for Easter and Christmas.

If you travel off season, not booking shouldn't be that much of a problem even if I would personnaly rather book at least the first night.

Thanks. I was looking at Rome for the mid/end of September, and there wasn't much availability. It also kept saying it was the High Season, so everything is more expensive.

Rome is more a year round destination than Sicily.

Moreover it also depends on the type of accommodation. In august, it is almost impossible to find last minute availabilities in beach hotels. If you go in town or in the countryside, it is different. A French person I know booked yesterday for friday night in a farm house.
