Is there a day train from Palermo to Rome in June?

We will be spending a week in Palermo in June and Himself has decided he wants to go to Rome by train, but we aren't interested in the night train.

There seem to be trains during the day this month, but we have been unable to find one on the 12th or 13th of June, and the website is acting strangely: you select a 7.00 am train and press the buy button, and the page changes to a train at 18.30!

Do we need to book ahead of time, or can we leave it for a couple of weeks?

Trenitalia schedules will update 8 June, so you'll have to check schedules then, but schedules typically don't change too drastically.

It's a long, tedious and often delayed journey by train!

Consider flying. It's a long journey by train. It is quicker more confortable and sometimes cheaper by train.

It's a very long journey by train!

Flying is fast and inexpensive, and you might also consider the overnight ferry to Naples, and then the train from Naples to Rome - The ferry saves the cost of a hotel.

Thank you Vagabonda, can you tell me where the ferry to Naples leaves from? are their cabins or airline type seats?

We had started looking at a night in San Giovani followed by the express to Rome : we will consider any options.

We intend to fly from Rome to Kayseri (Turkey).

We have taken the overnight ferry from Palermo to Naples. We had a cabin for two, but there was also seating. The ferry leaves from Palermo docks around 8.30 in the evening and gets into Naples around 6 the next morning. The food for dinner was quite good. We did not wake in time for breakfast, and had that at a cafe in Naples train station.

Prego JudithKellett,

Tirrenia and SNAV are the two companies running overnight ferry service from Palermo to Naples.

The ferries depart from Palermo’s port directly in the city.

If you were to decide to take the train, perhaps spend the night in Reggio di Calabria.

But why not fly from Palermo to Rome, and then fly onward to Turkey?

easyJet, Alitalia, and blu-express fly from Palermo to Rome Fiumicino.

Thank you all for your comments and advice. We have modified our plans!

We will cross the Straits of Messina on the ferry and spend the night in Villa San Giovanni, and get the fast train to Napoli the next morning early, then we will take the Circumvesuviano to Pompeii and spend 2 nights there, after that we will hasten to Rome and catch a flight to Kayseri, Turkey.

This way Himself gets some train rides and a look at another volcano, tho he might not get to climb it :-)

I get to see some lanscapes zooming past, and a chance to potter around Pompeii.

All these have been booked, so I feel as if another plank has been nailed down.

By the time we get all the planning done I will need a holiday: I'm starting to look like my passport photo.

You might take the hydrofoil to Reggio di Calabria and spend the night there. There's nothing to see in Villa San Giovanni while , depending on time, there are things to see in Reggio tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g187777-Activiti…

From there you can take the same train to Naples
