I'm going on a cruise and one of our stops is Messina, Italy for 7 hours. What should I see there and what type of transportation is available to make the most of the short time I have there?

yes I am very interested in this as I would like to see mount etna and only have afew hours to spend off the ship

As a shore excursion from Messina, you have two very good options - Taormina, or Mount Etna.

You could visit Taormina on your own with public transportation from Messina by rail or bus, or hire a private driver.

Mount Etna is a phenomenal experience, but with a short time, you would need to do a shore excursion.
