Assume you are bringing your own Motorhome (driving from the UK)

Specifcally Catania or Sicily

What experience have you with campsites/camping in Italy.

As you are driving from the UK you will obviously stop off in various places/countries/Regions

SITES FACILITIES

In Italy as a general rule of thumb the further south you go the more basic and often more isolated campsites tend to become. The highest proportion of high quality sites (location and services) are around Lake Garda.

As you go further south although you will find some good quality sites with good amenities they are few and far between. You can easily find yourself with very few amenities and having to pay for showers!!

REGULATIONS

In addition you will often find that some (many) sites have "circulation" restrictions. Like Italian shopping Italian campsites (outside of the Garda area) "shut down" around 1pm-3pm. Often locking the gates and restricting vehicle access - no good if you want to arrive or leave.

I have even known some sites to shut the pool (how daft is that - hottest part of the day - go figure)

LOCATION

Always check the EXACT location of any site. Do not take a campsite's address or the Sites own blurb as an indication of location. YOu can bvery often end up miles from where you thought you were going.

Often "camping areas" around popular holiday destinations e.g. coastal resorts can be very isolated outside of the the main resort: Sites often isolated from a main town area.

In italy isolated rural areas/one horse towns do not have their own postal adresses. As such any properties, including campsites, have to take their "postal address" from the nearest town or village

Purely as an example. This place is a 2* site. 7km from Catania (south of the Airport) in the middle of nowhere but has a "Catania address, coin operated showers

Yes, there are lots of motorhomes in Sicily, but January is low season and coastal areas are especially deserted, even if campsites remain open the entire year.

Avoid the long drive and ferry part of the journey, perhaps even ferry from Naples since the A3 from Salerno to Reggio di Calabria has many sections under construction – TTT Lines runs overnight ferry service from Naples to Catania, and SNAV or Tirrenia run the overnight ferry service from Naples to Palermo.

Prego Singletravelerone,

Then perhaps first holiday in Sicily by plane - You would have more flexibility to check weather nearer the time of your travel. Then once more familiar with Sicily, return in season with a motorhome.
