In Palermo during end of Dec

We are going to fly in and out from Palermo and wanted to know what kind of itinerary would be suitable - should we just try to be in Western Sicily or maybe few day on Eastern side too. We will have 6 days and 5 nights in total

Not so fond of beaches and winter may not be a good time to be on a beach either. But me and my husband definitely like walking through the older parts of towns, villages etc and see the historical places and eat in some of the most local areas...

Any advice? Also, we may want to be in Palermo for a day or two ( depending on what suggestions we get). So, would car rental be better for laces outside Palermo?

Ok. This is the tentative itinerary we have for ourselves and few areas where we need advice.

Arrive 29th Dec Palermo airport in the evening

30 th and 31 Dec in Palermo

1st Jan morning - rent a car from Palermo airport (or nearby place maybe) - drive to Erice and spend day around there

2nd Jan morning - start driving to Agrigente and spend day there

3rd Jan - Need suggestions

4th Jan - Need suggestions

Our flight is at 9pm on 4th Jan from Palermo airport

So, all in all we are there from 30th morning to 4th late evening. Areas where we need help

1) Is is good to rent a car from Palermo airport as we have to anyways come back to Palermo airport to catch flight back home. Or ( beacuse of horror stories about driving around and in Palermo) would it be better to, say, rent from some place more outside - e.g. Cefalu - and drop the car back there and catch transport back to airport

2) What are few things we can club, assuming we have the car, on 1st and 2nd while we are in Erice and Agirgente... Any places where we can take a detour and spend few hours in villages or scenic locations

3) What should we plan for on 3rd and 4th. We can drive east from Agrigente if needed but if there are any other old towns, culinary places / events ( since it would be Christmas time, so there may be few things going on), we would love to know about them. We love old towns, food, wine but not so much in museums etc.

Hi. consider one more day in Trapani province, there's not only Erice to visit, Segesta and Selinunte ruins are highlights of western Sicily, and Trapani itself would be worth a look, could be good as a base for the area.

Welcome to Sicily Surbhi S!

Six days (5 nights) is a very minimal time to spend in Sicily – Western and Eastern Sicily is a 2-week itinerary. With less than a week, you might focus on Western Sicily, or a combination of highlight destinations between Palermo and Eastern Sicily, but with a departing flight from Palermo, you would optimise your time by staying in Western Sicily.

Perhaps divide your time between Trapani and Palermo – Begin in Trapani.

Hire the car at Palermo’s airport on arrival or take the direct Interbus service from Palermo’s airport to Trapani and hire the car in Trapani. Then return the car at Palermo’s airport prior to your arrival in Palermo. Take the bus from the airport to Palermo and use public transport in Palermo.

Remember that 1 January is a national holiday and shops would be closes – New Year's Day is a very quiet time!

The archaeological sites (Segesta, Selinunte, Agrigento…) would be open on New Year's Day.

Need advice on ferries from Palermo to Sardinia, Corsica:

Is Trapani worth staying over Palermo?:

Hi Vagabonda and Biondo

Thanks a lot for your comments. We have decided to spend the 6 days in western Sicily itself and get a true feel about it.. We have booked 3 nights in Palermo at Butera 28 to begin with ( sorry Vagabonda - I saw the post quite late and had made the reservations already to start the trip with 3 nights at Palermo) Few other areas where we want your help

1) Segesta, Selinunte, Agrigento - All all archaeological sites. Though we would love to visit all of them, I was wondering if we would be missing on something else given that we would be using 3 days of our trip ( with base as Trapani) in going to these 3 sites.. Would you recommend any other places of cultural significance or vineyards etc.. Ideally, we would like to, maybe, use the 3rd and 4th day for these sites and then use the remaining two days to do something more - villages, wineyards, or may be something else that you may recommend. One day I think we would be reserning for Erice.. We would be using Trapani as base after 2 days in Palermo to begin with...

2) Any post that you could point us to for things to see and do in Palermo

3) Any suggestions for good places to stay in Trapani..
