Sicily itinerary

So - here is our itinerary for 2 weeks in Sicily this October - Already anticipating reactions about how much we are squeezing in -- so - am looking for reactions as to what are the potential trade offs. Will be travelling with one of my sisters - genesis of the trip - to visit the birth communities of our grandparents: Castelbuono and Petralia Soprana. So here goes:

Days 1 -3 - traveling between Castelbuono, Petralia Soprana and Cefalu to "explore roots"

Day 4 - travel to palermo and sight see there ( Stanze al Genio, Palazzo dei Normanni & Capella Palatina & Ballaro Market, Sferracavallo)

Day 5 - travel to Erice (Segeste:Greek Temple & remains of Ancient Greek Theatre; pastry shops, markets & wander city streets)

Day 6 Travel to Marsala - on the way - stop to take ferry to Mothia - hit a winery touor, spend night in Marsala

Day 8 & 9 head to Agrigento - tour Ruins of Selinunte; Gibellina nuova; the scala dei turchi; The Valley of the Temples, sightsee old town center, Riserva Naturale di maccalubbe)

Day 10 - head to ragusa - Piazza Armerina, Villa Romana del Casale)

Day 11&12- head to Siracusa - stop at Noto en route; see ortygia

Day 13 & 14 - Stay in Catania, see Taormino, Etna

Day 15 - fly home

1. Re: Sicily itinerary

Ciao SuzanneZS,

As you already know, you’re trying to squeeze in too much and you haven’t allocated sufficient time for many destinations.

It’s not clear where you expect to base on Day 4 and Day 5, nor is it clear where you'll spend some of the other nights as well, so could you please clarify where you intend to spend your nights?

Do you plan to hire a car?

Castelbuono and Petralia Soprana are two of the loveliest towns in the Madonie.

You might consider contacting Carmelina Ricciardello (Sicilian Experience) in this area – Carmelina is wonderful!

SAIS Trasporti runs the bus service between Cefalù and Castelbuono, and Cefalù and Petralia Soprana. Unfortunately the SAIS Trasporti website has not been updated to reflect the bus schedules, but there’s one bus a day from Cefalù to Petralia Soprana that departs Cefalù at 17.30. This bus would arrive in Petralia Soprana about two hours later. If you were to arrive in Petralia Soprana from Palermo, the bus service is also provided by SAIS Trasporti. Buses depart Palermo at 12.20, 14.15, and 18.15.

It’s unlikely you’ll have time for Sferracavallo.

Segesta is most easily seen from Trapani.

It’s impossible to comment on the remainder of this itinerary without specifically knowing where you intend to spend your nights, and without knowing your mode of transportation.

3. Re: Sicily itinerary

Had all great intentions of coming back and writing a travel blog - but... In short - the trip was fantastic. In no small part because we took Vagabonda's advice and reached out to Carmelina of Sicilian Experience. Not only did she stay by our side as translator - (and very quickly - family member!!) when we met relatives in the Madonie region, she agreed to travel with us most of the 2 weeks as we traversed Sicily - moving counter-clockwise around the island - with forays inland to Enna and other amazing places. We experienced so much - from the historical to the everyday - meeting farmers and cheesemakers and vintners; we found great grandparents' birth records, hiked and ate (and ate). So much diversity of land, beauty, adventure on one island.

Welcome back and thanks ever so much SuzanneZS - Carmelina Ricciardello and Sicilian Experience are really quite special, and hopefully you will submit a review that would greatly benefit Carmeelina as well as future visitors to Sicily.

All the best to you!
