Weather in mid-May?

Is mid-May a good time to visit the Brixen and Bolzano area? We’ve heard the sun will be out and the flowers in bloom at lower elevations, plus fewer tourists – yet some snow may still be on the ground in the high country and the cable cars closed, plus not all shops may be open. Does anyone have experience touring the area in mid-May?

Thanks for your thoughts. We're definitely interested in this particular area but would hate to get there and find many things not yet open.

Hi,

Depends what "mid May" means. Between these 2 towns in Ortisei, Val Gardena the Mont Seuc cable car starts on May 21.

In Brixen, we enjoyed visiting the Diocean Museum. Fascinating exhibits.

In Bolzano, be sure to see "Oetzi the Ice Man" at the Museum of Archaeology.

I'd think mid May would be an excellent time of year to visit. On one trip we visited this area in late April. Enough was open then for us.

Nobody can predict the weather. Can be nice spring. Can be late winter. I go to Lake Garda every end of May ( for the last 20years-Whitsun) driving over the Brenner and past Bolzano. More often than not the weather is relatively mild and often sunny - although whether it is sunny or not is unpredictable.

One year driving home end of May the weather was particular bad (had been indifferent in the Region generally heavy rain and someties quite chilly and at the south of the Lake with one days peak temp only 12C weeks max low 20's - compare this to not unusual mid 30s) it was raining all the way through the Region and only 2C at the Brenner at lunchtime and snowing.

Friends who had been at the lake whole of May said it had been great 2 weeks before (so mid May)

Thanks for your thoughts. Weather sounds like Texas - unpredictable!

Will the weather determine whether or not the cable cars run and the shops open or do the shops open on a more fixed date?

I understand the weather could definitely dictate the cable car operation.

Thanks,

In general, cable cars run on a predetermined - published schedule.

The Mont Seuc in Ortisei, which I gave a link to, opens May 21st. Some close between seasons (ski/ season/summer-fall) for maintenence, etc.

As Paul as intimated already after the end of the ski season (normally around Easter) the whole of the dolomites go into a lull. Many small businesses close (restaurants, smaller Hotels/B&B), Cable cars shut down (good time for inter-season maintenance)

The cable car in Ortisei is very much the exception. The area generally (cable cars and businesses) doesn't get up and running for "summer" season until mid June.

We're beginning to think mid-May in Bolzano may be iffy. Could anyone suggest an interesting smaller city south that we might should investigate?

We arrive in Venice and depart from Vienna.

We had hoped to find a less crowded "middle" destination. There are 4 of us, 2 very interested in hiking and biking and the other 2 much more inclined toward shopping and people watching.

We had thought about the lake region?

Ideas from the veteran travelers in the area are definitely appreciated..

Well you could try lake Garda. You could stay at the south end of the lake, places like Lazise & Bardolino popular. A good selection of shopping in both, probably more in Bardolino - think Lazise has better restaurant locations for people watching.

There is also the local 62-64 bus that services the whole east side of the lake. Starts in Verona (more sightseeing/shopping)

Also hand for getting to/from Peschiera train station (on the Venice - Milan line)

For those of you interested in being more active you can hire bikes from local bike shops (know a couple in Lazise)

There is the cable car at Malcesine to go up Monte Baldo. Number of trails up there
