Travel from Milan International Airport to Lake Como area

We are arriving at the international airport in Milan and will be staying in Lake Como area. Which is the best way to travel to the Lake Como area from the airport?

There are three airports that serve Milan.

If you arrive at Malpensa, you can travel by train. For Como town, you can take a train towards Milan Cadorna and change at Saronna for Como Lago station, right at the waterfront. Or you can go to Milan Central and take a train to either Como San Giovanni station or to Varenna.

Varenna is halfway up the east side of the lake, and has short ferry connections to Bellagio and Menaggio.

From the other two airports, take a bus to Milan Central, then a train to Como or Varenna.

We are staying in Como, Italy and would like to take the scenic train to Lugano, Switzerland one way and return on the fast train. Does anyone know how to purchase tickets for the scenic train and which station it is located.

There is only one direct train line between Como and Lugano, used by both slow and fast trains. There is no special scenic train line, though a scenic bus journey is possible by changing buses in Menaggio and Lugano bus station to reach Lugano train station. There are also boats from Como to Menaggio.

Which scenic train are you thinking about? If you mean www.rhb.ch/Bernina-Express.2188.0.html?&L=4 you have a very long day indeed ahead of you - access that by train to Lugano then bus to Tirano (from March 29) as on the linked website, then train to St Moritz. Return by bus to Chiavenna (see www.sbb.ch ) then trains via Milan http://www.trenitalia.com/homepage_en.html (or to Varenna then boat, if the boat timetable permits). You will arrive back late in the evening. Advance purchase is not necessary on these trains, though reservation on the Bernina Express bus from Lugano is advisable and is necessary for observation cars on the Bernina Express..
