1. Re: day trips on the lake

There is no such thing as a day or multiday pass. All attractions are individual.

The classic attractions on the lake are:

-Visiting the -very attractive- villages of Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio

-Visiting the Villa's+their gardens:

Villa Melzi in Bellagio, Villa Monasterio in Varenna, Villa Charlotta in Tremezzo, Villa Balbianello in Lenno

-Visiting the city of Como

-Visiting the Castello Vezio above Varenna

All attractions are reached by ferry across the lake. The ferry is an attraction in itself, as from the ferry you can enjoy the splendour of Lake Como at its best.

Flexen's post might have missed your question. I do not know of any general pass for all of the various sights, villas. museums etc around the lake. However, you can get a day-pass for the ferry service. So can get unlimited on and off for a day. If you plan to spend your day in one area of the (ie not travel the full length of the lake) then tell ticket seller the range where you intend to travel and you can save a few euro.

We are also going to Bellagio in October and hoping to do the same as you, go out each day to different towns and villages and sightsee.

I found this website from the local ferry company giving some prices. A bit hard to understand but eventually it comes clear.

Hope this is some help to you. I think it is the Free Circulation tickets that you will be wanting.

When we stayed in Bellagio in mid Oct 2013 we took a tour with Bellagio Water Taxis. This was a one hour guided lake tour on a wooden speed boat and also included a tour of the Villa Balbianello. Its a husband and wife team. Very friendly. Both the lake tour and Villa were exceptional. Well worth the 50Euro per person we thought... Enjoy your trip...

50euro per person seems like a lot of money for just an hour in total, the tour of the villa would cut into quite a bit of that time.

You could do it yourself for about 14-15euro each, the return ferry ticket to Lenno would be roughly 7 and admission to the villa including the guided tour is also 7euro. The Villa Balbianello is owned by FAI, which is the Italian equivalent of the National Trust and their guides are excellent. The scenery around the villa and its gardens is simply breathtaking. If you don't want to go inside the villa, for a reduced price, you can just visit the gardens and stay there simply drinking in the beauty of the place for as long as you wish - opening times permitting of course.

On certain days, you cannot access the villa on foot, on those days you have to take a small boat around the cove, there is a charge for this I don't know the cost, but I don't think it's much.

In the small main square in Lenno, opposite the church, there is a fabulous (to my taste, anyway) gelateria "La fabricca del gelato", their flavours change daily - some of them very traditional - some more experimental!

Have a great time !

Sorry, just to clarify.

Bellagio Water Taxis is a total of 2.5hrs (or a bit more like ours was) for 50Euro.

One hour is cruising the lake on the luxurious Italian wooden speed boat, where it stops in front of various lake front mansions and you are told which millionaire owns it and a bit of history about the old building. This includes Richard Branson's mansion with its own boat house.

The tour of Villa Balbianello is 1.5hrs and includes a guided tour of the gardens and Villa buildings. Its amazing to hear about the history from 1787.

To do the Villa Tour on your own the prices would be:

- Gardens only 5Euro.

- Villa and Garden 11Euro (a one hour guided tour of the Villa)
