Milan to Lake Como

Hi, I'm planning to travel from Nice to Milan

1. 2D1N enough to see the famous attractions of Milan ie Duomo, Galleria Emmanuel & Scala?

2 Really want to see the Lake Como. Is it best to stay one night at Como or a full day trip from Milan is good enough?

3 Best to travel by train or bus (fr Milan to Como)? How long journey would it be?

Appreciate your suggestions :)

We just spent 6 days at lake como and barely scratched the surface. By the time you get there, you might see one or two things but that will be it . Villa Balbianello was our highlight (casino royale lake scenes) and suggest you ensure it is open on the day and at the very least go there. An overnight stay is far more sensible

If you just want to go there for the scenery and visit a couple of the towns then you could do that on a day trip; get the train to Varenna, have a look around the village then get a ferry to Bellagio, have lunch then return to Milan via Como but if you want to visit the Villas etc then you would need at least an overnight stay.

Hi Chrella

Thanks for the idea.

How long is the train ride or bus ride fr Milan to Lake Como? 2-3 hours ride? Wonder how far is Como from Milan?

Train ride better ? I wonder which mode gives better view on the route and/or more time-saving?

Txs.

To Lake Como (meaning the lake) from 1 (South lake Como, city of Como, train) to 2 hours (mid lake Como, Bellagio, trian + bus 2 hours or North lake Como, Colico, trian 2hours)

The city of Como is 45 km from Milano. Only trians from Milano to Como, not interesting views on the route but beautiful views with the boat on the lake after you've reached Como. Fast trains from Milano Centrale to Como san Giovanni (40 min), slower trains from Milano Garibaldi to Como San Giovanni and from Milano Cadorna to Como Lago (1 hr)

And also trains to beautiful Varenna (train station Varenna-Esino), one hour from Milano Centrale. Varenna has fairly frequent ferries to Bellagio and Menaggio across the most beautiful part of the lake.

Very helpful info! Thanks to all! I'm reading the info about Como and Varenna, it looks like Varenna is a more convenient overnight stay with the train back to Milan, accommodation & restaurants, am I right?

Varenna would be my choice, there are a few ferry trips you can take to some of the other villages. Bellagio is a must: a truly stunning place.

I would take the train one way and the slow ferry back to Como and then train to Milan.
