There is, or was, an excellent restaurant at the top of the upper funicular in the "Citta Alta". Not the funicular that takes you up to the Citta Alta but walk across the medieval old town towards the "Rocca" and there is the second funicular. As soon as you come out of the tiny upper station the restaurant has an outside area on the left, under the trees with a great view over Bergamo and the plain. Lovely food as well.

Ther are also a couple of good restaurants in the Piazza Vecchia in the Citta Alta - La Fontana and Taverna Colleoni where we have also eaten well.

As for the Citta Bassa we had good food in our Hotel - the Excelsior San Marco in Piazzale Repubblica - but the Citta Alta is the place to visit.

Sorry, cannot help about taxis from Bergamo airport but it is not far from the city centre and there is always a bus service to the town centre.

Just arrived back yesterday from La Valletta, You will not be dissapointed with the hotel, it is in beautiful location and it is a wonderful place to stay.

Taxi from the airport is approx 25 euros but print off a map and address as the airport taxis don't all know how to get there.

you can take the bus to Bergamo station and get a taxi from there at 14 euros. The hotel owner Mario took us back to the airport.

The best place we ate was at the Trattoria Parietti Piero which is the first place you come to when walking back to town from La Valletta (about 10mins) the food, the sevice and the atmosphere is truly Italian. There is an abundance of places to eat in the old town from pizzas to expensive restaurants.
