Nice to Genoa

I am travelling from Nice to Genoa. Is it better to take the train or the bus? And is there a bus?

with which one will we have the best view of the coast?

There is no bus from Nice to Genoa. By train, you have to take a French train to Ventimiglia and change there to an Italian train. At present, tunnel repairs mean that you also have to change at Monaco.

For French train times and costs, see www.tgv-europe.com but note there is no point trying to book with this site. These are local (TER) trains with no seat reservations and no discount for advance purchase.

For Italian train times and costs, see www.trenitalia.it/homepage_en.html

The train is most frequent, but currently requires changes of train at both Monaco (due to tunnel repairs) and Ventimiglia. For times and fares from Nice to Ventimiglia (no bookings necessary, no reservable seats) see www.tgv-europe.com or perhaps better for you, www.voyages-sncf.com in French. If required, these sites will also give you an advance booking all the way from Nice to Genoa if you are resident in Canada and not the USA.

The full service from Ventimiglia to Genoa is available from www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html including slower cheaper Regional trains not on the other two sites, the fares for which are only shown seven days in advance and otherwise read NA though do not change. However it is more comfortable to take the faster InterCity trains with reserved seats (they do not sell out).

There is no bus from Nice centre, but there is a bus from the airport, only once a day after 5 September http://www.volpibus.com/orari.asp/l/50

On balance the views are probably best from the bus as it travels higher above the coast and the tunnels are short - but the evening bus finishes its journey in the dark. The train also offers some wonderful views of the coast, particularly between Nice and Bordighera, but there are some very long tunnels in Italy including one of nine miles under San Remo.
