For cheapest, fastest trains....

Book Milan to Spiez on http://www.fsitaliane.it/homepage_en.html - select train, click Continue, then choose SMART from the Select Your Fare menu for a €22 advance fare.

Book connecting train from a precise Cinque Terre village to Milano Centrale on www.trenitalia.com - there are direct trains from Monterosso, the website will show you where to change trains from other villages.

Booking not yet available for trains after June 8.

Buy Spiez-Interlaken from www.sbb.ch within one month of travel, or buy at Spiez station - there are no advance reductions and no reserved seats.

Interlaken is easier to get to from either Venice or Florence: nowhere near so long on a train or as many changes of train. Best route is probably starting in Cinque Terre, then Florence, and finally Venice. Local regionale trains from CT to Florence, so no need to book. Just turn up at the station, buy a ticket, VALIDATE IT, and hop on. Florence to Venice is by fast train, so book this as far in advance as you can for best pricing. Tickets go on sale 120 days before travel, and get progressively more expensive as your departure date nears.

From Venice it's fast train to Milan and change there to Spiez where you change again for Interlaken. Buy your tickets for travel within Italy from Trenitalia (www.trenitalia.com). From Milan to Interlaken (or even Venice to Interlaken if you want) buy from the Swiss rail site (http://www.sbb.ch/en/home.html).

Please tell me you're just changing trains in Interlaken for one of the delightful little mountain or lake villages close by. Interlaken is a rather dismal gateway town that close to some fantastic places, but it's not fantastic in itself. If you're going there make sure to stay outside: somewhere like Wengen, Murren, Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald would be a great choice.

Do not buy your tickets to Spiez or Interlaken from www.sbb.ch unless you can collect the tickets from a Swiss train station or are prepared to pay a large fee to have them couriered to the USA. As advised earlier in this thread, buy to Spiez from Trenitalia, and from Spiez to Interlaken in Spiez or online within one month travel.

The trentialia website has changed since this old thread was written. On www.trenitalia.com to get cheap advance tickets to Spiez from Milano Centrale (or Venezia S. Lucia) you must now select the <VIEW OTHER PRICES AND SERVICES (CARTAFRECCIA offers, discount cards, other offers)> button then on the next page find SMART in a drop down menu in the 'Offers' column (click the arrow by 'Base'). It is often cheaper to book Venice-Milan and Milan-Spiez separately.

If you are staying in Monterosso in the Cinque Terre, the journey to Milan by train is only 30 minutes longer than from Venice, so going the other way around is perfectly feasible. There are also connections between Monterosso and Florence which use Intercity trains with reserved seats between Monterosso and Pisa, which are well worth booking in advance. For other Cinque Terre villages, the advice offered in the previous post is more accurate.
