Telephone Dialing

I was asked by the innkeeper to call him at + 39 349/ followed by seven more numbers. When I call him, I will be either in Milan or at the train station in Monterosso. What does the plus sign mean?

Thank you.

Plus is instead of 00 for international dialing i.e Italy is +39 UK is +44 Spain +34 and your own country is +1.

If you are dialing from an Italian number you will not need the +39. 349 will be his mobile number as Monterosso area code is La Spezia's 0187

So from Milan, I would dial 349 and the next seven numbers and that is it?

If I dialed from Switzerland, I would dial 00 39 349 and the next seven digits?

Are you using your own cell phone to call? That may change the answers. If you are using a phone with a non Italian number to an Italian number, then you have to use the 0039 prefix. If you are using an Italian number, then it's 349/. When I use my cell phone with an Italian number to another Italian number, I don't have to dial 0039 no matter where I'm calling from.
